Ancipro is used to treat infections caused by one or more harmful organisms. Ancipro can also treat infections caused by bacteria that don’t respond to other antibiotics like Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins.

Pharmacology

Ancipro is a synthetic antibiotic that works against a wide range of bacteria. Ancipro is effective against many types of bacteria, including those in the Enterobacteriaceae family and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Ancipro also works on some gram-positive bacteria, but some streptococci are resistant. Ancipro works by blocking the enzyme DNA gyrase, which bacteria need to create DNA. After taking Ancipro by mouth, Ancipro is quickly absorbed and spreads throughout the body. Ancipro has a half-life of about 3.5 hours, and about 30% to 50% of the dose is excreted in the urine as unchanged drug and active metabolites.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual dose is between 100-750 mg twice a day, depending on the type of infection.

For urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily.

For respiratory infections: 250-500 mg twice daily for mild cases, or 750 mg for Streptococcus pneumonia infections.

For gonorrhea: A one-time dose of 250 or 500 mg.

For other infections: 500-750 mg twice daily.

For cystic fibrosis: The normal dose is 750 mg twice daily.

Impaired renal function: Dosage adjustments may be needed for patients with severe kidney issues.

Elderly: No dosage adjustment is usually required, but higher drug levels may be found in elderly patients.

Children and adolescents: Not recommended for growing children, but if necessary, the dose is 7.5-15 mg per kg of body weight per day.

Duration: Treatment usually lasts 5 to 10 days. For acute infections, treatment should continue for three days after symptoms go away.

Extended-release tablets: For urinary tract infection, 1000 mg once a day for three days.

IV infusion: For different types of infections, dosages vary from 200 mg to 400 mg every 12 or 8 hours for 7-14 days depending on the infection type and severity.

Ancipro should not be taken with antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or sucralfate, or with products containing calcium, iron, or zinc. These should be taken 2 hours after or 6 hours before taking Ancipro. Avoid taking Ancipro with milk or dairy products as this can reduce its absorption.

Contraindications

Ancipro is not recommended for people who are allergic to Ancipro or to other quinolone antibiotics.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, and tiredness. Some people may also experience skin rashes or joint pain. In rare cases, more serious reactions like confusion, convulsions, or retinal detachment can occur. Liver problems may also happen, especially in those with liver disease.
