Indications
Avil is used for treating allergic conditions like hay fever, drug rashes, swelling (angioneurotic edema), serum sickness, eye allergies (conjunctivitis), food allergies, and more. Avil is also used for respiratory issues like rhinitis (runny nose) and acute rhinitis. Avil helps with skin itching conditions like eczema, neurodermatitis, hives, itching around the anus or genitals, and itching due to liver or diabetes problems. Avil can prevent and treat motion sickness, as well as nausea, vomiting, and dizziness from inner ear issues like Meniere’s disease.
Pharmacology
Avil works by blocking histamine from attaching to H1 receptors, which reduces itching, redness, and swelling. Avil also has sedative effects that help with drowsiness. Additionally, Avil may reduce itching by working on other receptors related to inflammation.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: Start with a low dose after or with food. The dose should be increased only if needed, up to a maximum of 3 mg/kg per day. Elderly patients should use the normal adult dose with caution.
For Motion Sickness: Take the first dose at least 30 minutes before travel. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking the dose due to drowsiness.
Pheniramine Maleate tablets: For adults and children over 10 years, start with half a tablet up to three times a day. This can be increased to one tablet up to three times daily if needed. Children aged 5-10 years should take half a tablet up to three times daily. Not recommended for children under 5 years old.
Interaction
Taking with MAO-inhibitors can intensify certain effects. The sedative effects are stronger if taken with alcohol or other CNS depressants (e.g., sedatives or tranquilizers). Atropine and similar drugs can increase the anticholinergic effects.
Contraindications
Avil is not recommended for patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients, including methyl hydroxybenzoate or propyl hydroxybenzoate (used in the syrup). Also, avoid use in patients with prostate problems, those on MAO-inhibitors, and newborns or premature infants.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, which may go away after a few days. Other possible effects include dizziness, inability to focus, dry mouth, constipation, nausea, blurred vision, and muscle weakness. Rarely, serious effects like blood issues (e.g., low white blood cell count) may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avil is safe to use during pregnancy only if absolutely necessary. Consult a doctor before using if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Avil may cause drowsiness, so be cautious when driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcohol and other sedatives. Be careful in patients with prostate issues, glaucoma, asthma, or severe heart disease. Avil may mask other conditions’ symptoms, so don’t take Avil on an empty stomach.
Overdose Effects
In high doses, Avil can cause both excitatory and depressant effects on the nervous system, including seizures, coma, and death, especially in children. Treatment involves supportive care and managing symptoms. Avil is important to avoid using stimulants and to use medications like diazepam to control convulsions.

Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date and only use if prescribed by a registered physician.
