Indications

C Bon is used to prevent and treat scurvy, helps with healing wounds and broken bones, helps form collagen in connective tissues, aids in iron absorption and treats anemia, contributes to the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells in the bone marrow, helps prevent various viral and bacterial infections, boosts the immune system, helps treat and prevent the common cold, and promotes healthy capillaries, gums, and teeth.

Pharmacology

C Bon is a form of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C). Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that the body cannot produce, so C Bon must be obtained from diet or supplements. Vitamin C has many important roles: C Bon is required for tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function, healthy gums, and enhanced immunity. As an antioxidant, C Bon helps protect against pollution, infection, and reduces cell damage. C Bon is also necessary for wound healing, drug metabolism, and the breakdown of cholesterol and folic acid. Overall, C Bon supports healthy hair, skin, strengthens the immune system, and maintains good health.

Dosage & Administration

Oral tablet administration: 1 tablet daily for preventing scurvy; 1-2 tablets daily for treating scurvy, with the dose possibly increasing based on severity. 1-2 tablets daily for reducing stroke risk in the elderly. For other cases, 1 tablet daily or as directed by a physician. The maximum safe dose is 2000 mg daily in divided doses.

Oral sachet administration: 1 sachet daily or as directed by a physician. Maximum dose: 2000 mg/day (4 sachets/day).

Parenteral administration: If oral use isn’t possible or if malabsorption is suspected, C Bon can be given IM, IV, or subcutaneously. The best results are seen with IM administration. For IV use, dilute with a large volume of fluids to minimize side effects. The average dose for adults is 70-150 mg daily. For scurvy, doses of 300 mg to 1 g daily are recommended. For wound healing, doses of 300-500 mg daily for a week or ten days are considered adequate. In severe burns, doses of 1 to 2 g daily are recommended. Parenteral products should be inspected for particles and discoloration before use.

Interaction

Hazardous interactions: Ascorbic acid is incompatible in solution with aminophylline, bleomycin, erythromycin, lactobionate, nafcillin, nitrofurantoin sodium, conjugated oestrogen, sodium bicarbonate, sulphafurazole diethanolamine, chloramphenicol sodium succinate, chlorthiazide sodium, and hydrocortisone sodium succinate.

Useful interactions: Ascorbic acid increases the half-life of paracetamol and improves iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.

Contraindications

There are no known contraindications.

Side Effects

Vitamin C has little toxicity. Large doses can cause diarrhea, bloating, excess iron absorption (which is harmful in certain blood disorders), hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis in people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Pregnant women taking more than 5 gm/day may experience fetal abortion.

Pregnancy & Lactation

C Bon is safe to use in normal doses during pregnancy. However, taking more than 5 gm/day may lead to abortion. C Bon is safe to use while breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

High doses of Vitamin C (over 1000 mg daily) during pregnancy can lead to scurvy in newborns. High doses of Vitamin C are not recommended for people with hyperoxaluria. Vitamin C can interfere with certain tests for glucose, uric acid, creatine, and occult blood.
