Indications
Caridol 250 is used to relieve discomfort caused by acute, painful muscle conditions in adults. Caridol 250 also helps with sedation and reduces anxiety in patients with severe pain. Caridol 250 can be used as an addition to physical therapy for injuries.
Pharmacology
Caridol 250 works as an indirect agonist at the GABA-A receptor and affects the chloride channel in the central nervous system (CNS). This helps produce a sedative effect and may also reduce anxiety, prevent seizures, and relax muscles. One of its metabolites, Meprobamate, has sedative and anxiety-reducing properties. Caridol 250 reduces the signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles, causing them to relax and decrease spasms. Caridol 250 does not directly affect the muscles themselves.
Dosage & Administration
Adults (18 years and older): The recommended dose is 250 mg to 350 mg three times a day and at bedtime. The use of Carisoprodol should be limited to two or three weeks. Caution should be taken for patients with kidney or liver problems or reduced CYP2C19 activity.
Interaction
Caution should be used if Caridol 250 is taken with other CNS depressants such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids, or tricyclic antidepressants. If taken with CYP2C19 inhibitors (e.g., Omeprazole, Fluvoxamine), the effects of Carisoprodol may be stronger. On the other hand, if taken with CYP2C19 inducers (e.g., Rifampin), the effects of Carisoprodol may be weaker.
Contraindications
Caridol 250 is contraindicated for patients with a history of acute intermittent porphyria or allergic reactions to carbamates like meprobamate.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and headaches.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Caridol 250 is classified as Pregnancy Category C. Using Carisoprodol during pregnancy may reduce or affect infant feeding (due to sedation) and may decrease milk production. Caution is advised when administered to breastfeeding women.
Precautions & Warnings
Due to its sedative properties, Caridol 250 may impair the ability to perform tasks that require full alertness, like driving or operating machinery. Caridol 250 can have stronger sedative effects when used with other CNS depressants, including alcohol. There have been reports of drug dependence, withdrawal, and abuse. Caridol 250 may also cause seizures in some cases.
Overdose Effects
Overdose may lead to CNS depression, including death, coma, respiratory depression, hypotension, and seizures. Immediate medical intervention is needed, including basic life support. Gastric lavage may be performed within an hour of ingestion. Supportive care such as intravenous fluids, vasopressors, and seizure management with benzodiazepines may be necessary. Tracheal intubation may be needed for severe CNS depression.
