Cetaxim 500 IV/IM is used to treat various infections, either before the bacteria are identified or when the bacteria are known to be sensitive to Cetaxim 500 IV/IM. These include blood infections, lung infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, and chest infections after surgery, urinary tract infections, soft tissue infections like skin infections, infections of the bones and joints, pelvic infections, gonorrhea (especially when penicillin doesn’t work), and other bacterial infections like meningitis.

Cetaxim 500 IV/IM is also used to prevent infections after certain surgeries, especially in situations where infection risk is high.

Pharmacology

Cetaxim 500 IV/IM works by attaching to certain proteins in bacteria, preventing the bacteria from building their cell walls. Without the cell wall, the bacteria die. Cetaxim 500 IV/IM is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is effective against both gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria that are resistant to older antibiotics.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: For mild to moderate infections, 1 gm every 12 hours. The dose may be higher for severe infections, up to 12 gm per day in divided doses. For certain bacteria, doses over 6 gm per day may be required.

Children: The usual dose is 100-150 mg per kg of body weight per day, divided into 2-4 doses. Severe infections may need up to 200 mg per kg per day.

Neonates: The recommended dose is 50 mg per kg per day, divided into 2-4 doses. For severe infections, the dose may be 150-200 mg per kg per day.

Gonorrhea: 500 mg as a single dose.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare and usually mild. These can include yeast infections, rashes, fever, temporary increases in liver enzymes, and diarrhea. Allergic reactions like skin rashes, fever, and rarely, severe reactions like anaphylaxis may also occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal studies didn’t show harm to the baby, the safety of Cetaxim 500 IV/IM during pregnancy in humans is not fully known. Cetaxim 500 IV/IM should only be used during pregnancy if the benefit outweighs the risks. Cetaxim 500 IV/IM passes into breast milk, so Cetaxim 500 IV/IM should be used cautiously during breastfeeding.
