Indications
Cleo 35 is used to treat severe acne in women who do not respond to oral antibiotics and other treatments. Cleo 35 also helps with symptoms like seborrhea and mild hirsutism (excessive hair growth) related to androgenization.
Pharmacology
Cleo 35 contains two active ingredients: Cyproterone and Ethinyl Estradiol. Cyproterone works as an antiandrogen by blocking androgen receptors and reducing androgen production. Ethinyl Estradiol, an estrogen, increases the levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), lowering free androgen levels in the blood. Cyproterone can disrupt the menstrual cycle if used alone, but when combined with Ethinyl Estradiol, this effect is prevented. The combination also prevents ovulation and pregnancy. After taking Cleo 35, the active ingredients are absorbed quickly, and long-term use does not significantly affect lipid metabolism. Some increases in cholesterol and triglycerides were observed.
Dosage & Administration
First Treatment Course: Take 1 tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, starting on the first day of the menstrual cycle. After 21 days, stop for 7 days. Bleeding should occur during this break. The first cycle may be shorter than usual, but following cycles will be 4 weeks long. Take the tablet at the same time each day.
Subsequent Courses: Continue taking the tablet for 21 days on, 7 days off, starting the next course 7 days after finishing the previous one, regardless of bleeding status. Treatment should continue for several months for best results, as improvement may take up to 3 months.
Missed Dose: If a tablet is missed, Cleo 35 can be taken within 12 hours. If more than 12 hours have passed, discard the missed tablet and continue with the rest. Use a nonhormonal contraceptive until the pack is finished.
Interaction
Some drugs, like Ampicillin, Analgesics, Antihistamines, and Tetracycline, can reduce the effectiveness of this tablet and cause breakthrough bleeding. Other drugs like anticoagulants, antihypertensives, and benzodiazepines may also be affected. Certain medications, such as Carbamazepine and Rifampicin, can speed up the breakdown of the estrogen, reducing its effectiveness. Diabetic patients may need adjustments to their medication.
Contraindications
Cleo 35 should not be used in patients with conditions such as thrombophlebitis, a history of heart or blood vessel issues, liver disease, or certain cancers like breast cancer. Cleo 35 is also not recommended for women who are pregnant or have severe diabetes.
Side Effects
Common side effects include bleeding, dizziness, depression, weight gain, headache, breast pain, and gallstones.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy should be ruled out before starting treatment. This medication may cause fetal abnormalities if taken during early pregnancy. Cleo 35 is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers as Cleo 35 may reduce milk quality and quantity. Long-term effects on the baby are unknown.
Precautions & Warnings
Cleo 35 is not recommended for women with a higher risk of heart disease, such as smokers or those with obesity, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Smoking while using this medication increases the risk of serious heart and blood vessel problems. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly. If any serious side effects occur, such as blood clots or vision issues, the medication should be stopped immediately.
Overdose Effects
There have been no reports of overdose. Treatment for overdose should be symptomatic and based on the known effects of the drug’s ingredients.
