Indications
Clotrim is used to treat vaginal itching, burning, and discharge caused by yeast infections, especially recurring vaginal yeast infections (Vaginal candidiasis). Clotrim is also used for treating infections in the vagina caused by Candida species and other fungal infections that can be complicated by other microorganisms sensitive to this drug.
Pharmacology
Clotrim is a broad antifungal medicine that helps treat skin infections caused by various harmful fungi, yeasts, molds, and some bacteria. Clotrim also works against some bacteria, especially Staphylococci, and Tricomonas. Clotrim works by changing the cell walls of fungi, stopping them from working properly. At lower doses, Clotrim stops the production of ergosterol, which is important for the fungi’s cell wall. At higher doses, Clotrim causes damage to the membrane, unrelated to sterol production.
Dosage & Administration
First infections: A 3-day treatment is usually enough for Candida vaginitis. Use one 200 mg vaginal tablet every night for 3 nights, inserting Clotrim deeply into the vagina while lying on your back with knees slightly bent.
Re-infections: A 6-day treatment is generally enough. Insert one 100 mg vaginal tablet deeply into the vagina every night for 6 nights. If needed, you can use two 100 mg tablets (one in the morning and one in the evening) or one 200 mg tablet daily for 6-12 days. Try to avoid starting treatment during your menstrual period and complete Clotrim before your period starts. Your partner should also be treated with Clotrimazole cream to prevent re-infection.
500 mg vaginal tablet: For a single dose, insert one 500 mg vaginal tablet deeply into the vagina, while lying on your back with knees slightly bent. Clotrim is recommended to avoid starting the treatment during your period, and your partner should also use Clotrimazole cream for local treatment.
The vaginal tablets are colorless and won’t stain your underwear.
Interaction
No information is available.
Contraindications
Clotrim is not recommended for people who are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Since Clotrim is not absorbed into the bloodstream from the vagina, no systemic effects are expected. The local tolerance is usually good. In some cases, there might be mild irritation or a burning feeling, but these symptoms are not harmful.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Clotrim is recommended to use Clotrim during pregnancy only when necessary, as advised by your doctor. Clotrim is poorly absorbed into the body when applied to the skin or vagina, and studies in pregnant women show no harm. Clotrim is not known if Clotrim is passed into breast milk. Clotrim can be used during pregnancy but only under a doctor’s supervision.
