Indications

Cloxil is used to treat infections caused by gram-positive bacteria. Cloxil is also indicated for infections caused by Staphylococcus that produce penicillinase. These infections include:

  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Boils, abscesses, carbuncles, furunculosis, cellulitis, infected wounds, infected burns, skin graft protection, and various skin infections like ulcers, eczema, and acne.
  • Respiratory tract, nose, ear, and throat infections: Pneumonia, lung abscess, empyema, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, quinsy, otitis media, and externa.
  • Other infections caused by penicillin-sensitive bacteria: Osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, and septicemia.

Mode of action

Cloxil works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, helping to treat infections.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 500 mg four times a day, half to one hour before meals.
Injection:
– For intramuscular injection: 250 mg every 4 to 6 hours.
– For intravenous injection: 500 mg every 4 to 6 hours. The dose may be doubled if needed.
– For pleural cavity injection: 500 mg once daily.
– For joint cavity injection: 500 mg once daily.

Pediatric patients:
– For oral use: Children aged 2-10 years should take half the adult dose. Children under 2 years should take one-fourth of the adult dose.
Injection:
– For intramuscular injection: 250 mg mixed with 1.5 ml or 500 mg mixed with 2 ml of water for injection.
– For intravenous injection: 500 mg mixed with 5-10 ml of water for injection. This solution should be administered slowly over 3-4 minutes. The solution can also be mixed with suitable fluids for infusion.

Contraindications

Cloxil is not suitable for patients who are hypersensitive to penicillin.

Side Effects

Side effects are generally mild and temporary. They may include fever, diarrhea, indigestion, and rashes. Any type of rash requires stopping the medication.

Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before using this medicine.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients with a history of allergies should use this medicine with caution. Cloxil should not be used as an eye drop or sub-conjunctival injection.

Prepared syrups and drops should be stored in a cool place, ideally in a refrigerator. These should be used within 5 days if stored at room temperature or within 7 days if refrigerated. Prepared solutions for injection should be used within 30 minutes.

Overdose Effects

In case of overdose, seek immediate medical help.

Storage Conditions

Store the medicine in a cool and dry place. The injection vials should be kept at temperatures not exceeding 25°C.
