Indications
Co-Diovan 12.5/80 is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Pharmacology
Co-Diovan 12.5/80 contains two active ingredients: Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide. Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that helps to relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure by blocking the action of a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) that works by removing extra fluid from the body, which helps to lower blood pressure.
Dosage & Administration
Hypertension: If blood pressure is not controlled by either Valsartan or Hydrochlorothiazide alone, the combination can be taken once daily. The maximum dose of Valsartan should not exceed 320 mg, combined with 25 mg of Hydrochlorothiazide.
Elderly: No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
Interaction
Valsartan: Patients on diuretics may experience a drop in blood pressure when starting Valsartan. Co-Diovan 12.5/80 may interact with potassium supplements, increasing potassium levels, or with lithium salts, reducing lithium clearance. Other interactions include Warfarin and Digoxin.
Hydrochlorothiazide: Alcohol, barbiturates, and narcotics may increase the blood pressure-lowering effect. Antidiabetic drugs may need dosage adjustment. Other antihypertensive drugs may have an additive effect. Cholestyramine and colestipol resins may reduce absorption of Hydrochlorothiazide.
Contraindications
Co-Diovan 12.5/80 is contraindicated in patients allergic to any of its ingredients. Co-Diovan 12.5/80 should not be used in patients with anuria or allergies to sulfonamide-derived drugs.
Side Effects
Co-Diovan 12.5/80 is generally well tolerated, with rare side effects. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, fatigue, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, and nausea. Other possible side effects are high potassium levels, impotence, kidney problems, allergic reactions, breathing problems, constipation, back pain, muscle cramps, skin rash, anxiety, insomnia, and vertigo. Low blood pressure (hypotension) may also occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Co-Diovan 12.5/80 should not be used during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as Co-Diovan 12.5/80 can harm or even kill the unborn baby. If pregnancy is detected, Co-Diovan 12.5/80 should be stopped immediately.
Nursing mothers: Co-Diovan 12.5/80 is unknown if Valsartan passes into breast milk, but Hydrochlorothiazide does. Consult a doctor before breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney problems. Dosage may need to be adjusted for patients with renal impairment, as thiazides can cause kidney issues. Co-Diovan 12.5/80 should also be used carefully in patients with heart failure or after a heart attack.
Overdose Effects
Valsartan overdose: May cause low blood pressure and rapid heart rate. In case of overdose, the patient should lie down and may need an intravenous infusion of normal saline.
Hydrochlorothiazide overdose: May cause electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, and low potassium levels, which can worsen heart arrhythmias. The effectiveness of hemodialysis in removing Hydrochlorothiazide is unknown.

Store at temperatures between 15°C and 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
