Indications
Cogniz is used for treating brain problems like stroke, where Cogniz helps the person recover consciousness and motor function. Cogniz works best when taken within the first 24 hours after a stroke for a better chance of full recovery in three months. Cogniz also helps with brain problems like dizziness, memory loss, poor focus, and confusion caused by head injuries. Cogniz is used for treating thinking problems related to diseases like Alzheimer’s. Cogniz is also helpful for Parkinson’s disease when used along with other treatments.
Pharmacology
Cogniz is a natural substance that helps make important parts of cell membranes in the brain. When taken, Cogniz turns into choline and cytidine, which enter the bloodstream and reach the brain. Once there, they form more of Cogniz in the brain. This helps repair brain cells and increase important brain chemicals like acetylcholine and dopamine. Cogniz also protects the brain during lack of oxygen or blood flow and can improve learning and memory in older brains. Cogniz helps prevent certain brain cell damage as well.
Dosage & Administration
Oral: For stroke caused by a blood clot, take 500-2000 mg per day, starting within 24 hours of the stroke. For thinking problems after a stroke, take 1000-2000 mg per day. For long-term brain blood vessel issues, take 1000 mg daily in divided doses with meals.
Injection: 1 to 2 injections daily. Adjust according to the severity. Can be given through a muscle (IM) or vein (IV) route (3-5 minutes). No dosage changes are needed for elderly patients.
Interaction
Cogniz may increase the effects of levodopa, carbidopa, and entacapone. Cogniz should not be taken with products that contain meclophenoxate.
Contraindications
Cogniz should not be taken by patients with high blood pressure in the parasympathetic nervous system.
Side Effects
Sometimes, Cogniz may stimulate the parasympathetic system, which can cause mild low blood pressure or dizziness.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies of Cogniz during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Cogniz should only be used in these cases if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Precautions & Warnings
Cogniz may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so do not operate machinery while taking Cogniz. Cogniz can also lower blood pressure, and in such cases, treatment with other medicines may be needed. In case of bleeding in the brain, the medicine should be given slowly. Alcohol should be avoided while taking this medicine.
