Indications
Coldex is used to relieve symptoms of upper respiratory tract disorders with productive cough, which benefit from a combination of a nasal decongestant, antihistamine, and expectorant.
Pharmacology
Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant and bronchodilator that helps relieve nasal congestion. Coldex works by stimulating certain receptors in the respiratory system, causing blood vessels to constrict and bronchial muscles to relax. Coldex also increases heart rate and contractility. Additionally, pseudoephedrine releases norepinephrine from its storage sites, which helps activate receptors that relieve congestion.
Guaifenesin is an expectorant that thins and loosens mucus, making Coldex easier to clear from the airways. Coldex also helps increase the hydration of the respiratory tract.
Triprolidine is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and hives.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and Children over 12 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) three times a day.
Children 6-12 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) three times a day.
Children 2-5 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoonful) three times a day.
Coldex is advised to consult a doctor before giving this medicine to children under 2 years.
Interaction
Using this medicine with other decongestants, tricyclic antidepressants, appetite suppressants, or amphetamine-like stimulants can increase blood pressure. Coldex may also interfere with the effect of certain blood pressure medications and may partially reverse their action.
Contraindications
Coldex is not recommended for people with known allergies to any of its ingredients, heart problems including high blood pressure, asthma, or those taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Side Effects
Possible side effects include drowsiness, sleep disturbances, skin rashes, dry mouth, nose, or throat, and an increased heart rate. Rarely, hallucinations may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Although this medicine has been used for many years without obvious harm, there are no specific studies on its use during pregnancy. Coldex is important to weigh the benefits for the mother against any possible risks to the baby.
Precautions & Warnings
This medicine can cause drowsiness. If affected, patients should avoid driving or operating machinery. Alcohol or other sedatives should not be used with Coldex. Caution is also needed for those with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, eye pressure issues, prostate problems, or severe kidney or liver problems. Coldex should not be used for persistent or chronic coughs unless prescribed by a doctor.
Overdose Effects
Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, irritability, dizziness, gastrointestinal issues, breathing problems, convulsions, tremors, rapid heartbeat, and high blood pressure. In case of overdose, supportive care should be provided, and gastric lavage may be performed if needed.
