Indications
Copnat-N Ointment is used for the short-term treatment of stubborn skin conditions such as eczema, neurodermatoses, and psoriasis (except when the condition is widespread). Copnat-N Ointment is also used when there is a secondary bacterial or fungal infection or if there is a risk of such infections. Copnat-N Ointment is helpful for other skin inflammation issues that do not improve with milder steroids.
Pharmacology
Copnat-N Ointment is a combination of three ingredients: Clobetasol Propionate, Neomycin Sulphate, and Nystatin. Clobetasol Propionate is a strong steroid that treats severe skin inflammation. Neomycin Sulphate is an antibiotic that helps fight bacterial infections, while Nystatin is an antifungal that kills fungi and yeast. The main way Clobetasol works is by reducing inflammation on the skin, partly by narrowing blood vessels and decreasing collagen production. Neomycin stops bacteria from making proteins and causes them to make mistakes in their genetic material. Nystatin changes the fungus cell membranes, causing leaks inside the cell.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Apply a small amount to the affected area once or twice a day until the condition improves. If the skin is thickened (hyperkeratosis), covering the treated area with plastic can improve results. Treatment should not last more than 7 days without consulting a doctor. If longer use is needed, check the patient’s condition after 4 weeks.
Elderly: Copnat-N Ointment is safe for elderly people, but caution is needed for those with kidney issues as Neomycin may be absorbed into the system.
Children: Copnat-N Ointment can be used in children aged 2 years and older, using the same dose as adults. Copnat-N Ointment is not recommended for infants under 2 years old as they may absorb too much of the cream/ointment.
Interaction
Neomycin Sulphate may increase the effects of other drugs that relax muscles during surgery, but if used as directed, this is unlikely to happen. There are no significant interactions reported with Clobetasol Propionate or Nystatin.
Contraindications
Copnat-N Ointment should not be used by people with rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, or any primary skin viral infections like herpes or chickenpox. Copnat-N Ointment should also be avoided if allergic to any of the ingredients.
Side Effects
Long-term use of large amounts or treating large skin areas can lead to absorption into the body, causing symptoms of high cortisol levels. This is more likely in children or if the area is covered with a dressing. Prolonged use of strong steroids can also lead to thinning of the skin, stretch marks, and broken blood vessels, especially when covered or used in skin folds. Some people may also experience changes in skin color or excessive hair growth.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is limited information on the safety of using Neomycin during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Neomycin can pass into the bloodstream and may affect the baby, so Copnat-N Ointment is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The safety of Clobetasol Propionate during breastfeeding has not been established.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid long-term use, especially in children, as Copnat-N Ointment may lead to problems with the adrenal glands. Be careful when applying near the eyes, as Copnat-N Ointment can cause glaucoma. If Copnat-N Ointment gets in the eyes, wash them with plenty of water.
Overdose Effects
An overdose is unlikely, but if Copnat-N Ointment occurs, long-term misuse may cause symptoms of high cortisol levels. In this case, the steroid treatment should be stopped gradually.
