Indications

Coralmet-D is used to treat and prevent conditions like osteoporosis, osteomalacia, tetany, hypoparathyroidism, and bone formation problems. Coralmet-D also helps when there is not enough calcium in the diet during childhood, pregnancy, lactation, or in elderly patients. Coralmet-D may also be used for pancreatitis and as a phosphate binder in chronic kidney failure.

Pharmacology

Calcium is essential for many body functions, and our body cannot tolerate low levels of Coralmet-D. Coralmet-D helps in preventing and treating osteoporosis and related fractures. Vitamin D is crucial because Coralmet-D helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone formation. The combination of Calcium and Vitamin D works together to promote bone health and prevent osteoporosis. The calcium in this medicine comes from coral, which has a structure similar to human bones, allowing for better absorption. Vitamin D3 helps absorb calcium and maintain the right balance in the body.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: One tablet once or twice a day with plenty of water, or as directed by your doctor. For better absorption, take Coralmet-D with food. If using the effervescent form, dissolve 1 tablet in a glass of water, stir, and drink. For best results, take with a full stomach.

Interaction

Thiazide diuretics may reduce calcium excretion, increasing the risk of high calcium levels. Corticosteroids can reduce calcium absorption, possibly requiring higher calcium doses. Certain medications like cholestyramine or paraffin oil can reduce vitamin D absorption. Calcium carbonate may interfere with tetracycline antibiotics, so take them at least two hours apart. High calcium levels can increase the effects of heart medications like digoxin. If using bisphosphonates or sodium fluoride, take this medicine at least three hours before them. Foods like spinach and whole cereals can lower calcium absorption.

Contraindications

Coralmet-D is not suitable for people with high calcium levels, hyperparathyroidism, kidney stones, or severe kidney problems. Coralmet-D should also be avoided in those who are allergic to any ingredient in this preparation, and in patients who are on digoxin therapy without careful monitoring of calcium levels.

Side Effects

Calcium carbonate may irritate the stomach or cause constipation. Rarely, high calcium levels may happen in people with kidney problems. Side effects can include allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dry mouth, or tiredness. Some people may also develop a rash after taking Vitamin D.

Pregnancy & Lactation

During pregnancy, do not exceed 1500 mg of calcium and 600 IU of vitamin D daily. High doses of Vitamin D can harm the developing baby, but normal doses are safe. Calcium and Vitamin D3 can also be used during breastfeeding. Both pass into breast milk, so be cautious if giving extra vitamin D to the baby.

Precautions & Warnings

During long-term use, regularly check calcium levels and kidney function, especially in older patients or those on heart medications or diuretics. Watch for signs of kidney stones or high calcium levels. If kidney function is impaired, use Vitamin D cautiously. People with sarcoidosis, osteoporosis, or those who are immobilized should use Coralmet-D carefully to avoid high calcium levels. Monitor calcium levels closely if taking other vitamin D supplements.

Overdose Effects

Taking too much can lead to high vitamin D and calcium levels. Symptoms of high calcium include loss of appetite, thirst, nausea, constipation, abdominal pain, weakness, fatigue, confusion, bone pain, and kidney stones. Severe cases may lead to abnormal heart rhythms, coma, or death. If an overdose occurs, stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately. Treatment may involve hydration, diuretics, and other medications to lower calcium levels.

Therapeutic Class

Specific mineral and vitamin combined preparation.
