Indications
Cortisol is used to treat eye inflammation that responds to steroids, affecting the conjunctiva, cornea, and front part of the eye.
Pharmacology
Cortisol works by reducing inflammation through blocking the movement of white blood cells and reducing the permeability of blood vessels. Cortisol also suppresses the immune system by lowering the activity and production of specific immune cells.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: Place one drop into the eye 2 to 4 times a day. For the first 24 to 48 hours, the dose may be increased if needed. Do not stop the treatment before completing the full course.
Pediatric: Safety and effectiveness for children have not been established.
Interaction
No significant interactions with other drugs have been reported.
Contraindications
Cortisol is not recommended for use in viral infections of the eye or if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or other corticosteroids.
Side Effects
Cortisol may cause increased eye pressure, which can lead to glaucoma, rare optic nerve damage, cataracts, and delayed healing of wounds. Long-term use may also increase the risk of fungal and viral eye infections.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cortisol is classified as pregnancy category C, meaning Cortisol should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Cortisol is unknown if the drug passes into breast milk, so caution should be used if given to breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Shake the bottle well before use. Prolonged use can harm the optic nerve and affect vision. If used for a long time, eye pressure should be monitored regularly.
Overdose Effects
A one-time accidental overdose is unlikely to cause major issues. Long-term overdose can cause general side effects. In case of accidental overdose, drink plenty of water to dilute the medication.
