Indications

Cosium is used for treating both short-term and long-term anxiety, which can cause symptoms like anxiety, tension, restlessness, excitement, irritability, and trouble sleeping. Cosium is also used for emotional problems, such as those affecting the heart or digestive system, and emotional instability.

If someone has depression along with anxiety, Cosium is important to use Cosium along with other treatments. Cosium should not be used alone for people with depression, as Cosium could increase the risk of suicide. Cosium is also not recommended as the main treatment for schizophrenia or other serious mental illnesses but can be used alongside other treatments.

Cosium is used for patients with epilepsy who are not fully controlled with other anti-seizure medicines.

Pharmacology

Cosium works by binding to specific sites in the brain that control calming signals. This helps increase the effects of the brain’s natural calming chemicals, leading to better control of symptoms like anxiety and restlessness.

Dosage & Administration

Adults and teens (15 years and older): Start with 20 mg daily. If needed, the dose can be increased, but Cosium is usually recommended to stay below 30 mg per day.

Elderly patients: Older adults may be more sensitive to the medicine, so a lower dose of 10-15 mg daily is usually enough.

Children (3-15 years): A lower dose of 5-10 mg per day is typically enough. Careful monitoring is important to ensure safety.

After symptoms improve, the dose may be reduced. If the dose is spread throughout the day, the larger dose should be taken in the evening.

The treatment should not last longer than 8-12 weeks, and regular check-ups are necessary. Cosium is important to not stop the medicine suddenly after long-term use, as withdrawal symptoms can occur. The dose should be lowered gradually under a doctor’s supervision.

Interaction

Alcohol: Drinking alcohol with Cosium can increase its effects, which can be dangerous.

Other sedatives: Combining Cosium with other drugs that calm the nervous system can increase its sedative effects, leading to more drowsiness or dizziness.

Opioids: Using Cosium with pain-relieving opioids increases the risk of serious side effects like breathing problems or coma.

Other anti-seizure medicines: Cosium may interact with other seizure medications, so the doctor should monitor the patient’s treatment closely.

Certain other medicines: Some medicines, like those used for depression, may need a dose adjustment if taken with Cosium.

Contraindications

Cosium should not be used by patients who are allergic to Cosium or any of its ingredients. Cosium is also not recommended for people with certain muscle or breathing problems, severe liver disease, or those who are breastfeeding. Cosium should not be given to children under 3 years old, except in very special cases.

Side Effects

Common side effects: Decreased appetite, irritability, restlessness, depression, and agitation.

Possible nervous system effects: Sleepiness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, slow speech, headache, tremor, and trouble with coordination, especially at high doses or with long-term use.

Vision problems: Double vision may occur, particularly at high doses or with long-term use.

Breathing issues: In rare cases, Cosium may cause breathing problems, especially in people with existing lung issues.

Other side effects: Dry mouth, nausea, constipation, skin rashes, and allergic reactions, including severe ones like Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Pregnancy & Lactation

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your doctor before using Cosium. Cosium should be avoided during the first trimester unless necessary. Cosium is generally safe to use during later stages of pregnancy if needed to prevent iron deficiency.

Precautions & Warnings

Be cautious if you have iron overload or other blood disorders. If the medicine is not helping, other causes for your symptoms may need to be checked out.

Overdose Effects

Overdosing on Cosium can cause symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, seizures, and even coma. Immediate medical help is needed if an overdose is suspected.

Therapeutic Class

Cosium is a combination of iron, vitamin, and mineral supplements used to treat deficiencies.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
