Indications
Coughex is used to treat refractory chronic cough or unexplained chronic cough in adults.
Pharmacology
Coughex is a selective antagonist of the P2X3 receptor. These receptors are located in the airways and are activated by inflammation or chemical irritants. The activation of these receptors triggers a cough reflex. By blocking these receptors, Coughex helps prevent chronic coughing.
Dosage & Administration
Adult patients: Take one 45 mg tablet twice daily with or without food. If you miss a dose, skip Coughex and take the next dose at the regular time.
Use in elderly patients: No dose adjustment is required, but older patients with impaired kidney function may be at a higher risk of side effects, so caution is needed.
Use in pediatric patients: Safety and effectiveness in children under 18 have not been established.
Patients with liver disease: Coughex has not been studied in patients with liver problems.
Patients with renal impairment: For those with severe kidney problems (eGFR <30 ml/min), take one 45 mg tablet once daily. No dose adjustment is required for mild to moderate kidney problems.
Effect on driving ability: Coughex may cause dizziness, so caution is needed when driving or using machinery.
Interaction
Concomitant use with the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole does not significantly affect the drug. Based on studies, Coughex has a low potential to interfere with other medicines.
Contraindications
Coughex is contraindicated in patients who have a severe allergic reaction to Coughex or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Common side effects include taste changes (like a loss of taste), dizziness, and upset stomach. Some may also experience dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea, and mouth numbness. Rarely, urinary stones may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Its use during pregnancy has not been studied. Coughex is not recommended for use in pregnant women or those who are not using contraception. Coughex is not known if Coughex passes into breast milk, but animal studies suggest Coughex does.
Precautions & Warnings
Coughex should be used with caution in patients with a known allergy to sulphonamides.
Overdose Effects
Overdose is unlikely to be life-threatening. Patients should be monitored for any adverse effects, and symptomatic treatment should be given. The drug is partially removed by hemodialysis.
