Indications

CS 1000ml is used to treat fluid and salt loss due to conditions like cholera, severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and low salt levels in the blood (severe electrolyte loss).

Pharmacology

CS 1000ml contains essential salts and carbohydrates (from processed rice) that help rehydrate the body during dehydration caused by conditions like cholera, diarrhea, vomiting, and excessive sweating.

In a healthy intestine, water is constantly exchanged through the intestinal wall. This helps absorb nutrients from food. During diarrhea, more water is lost than absorbed, causing dehydration. This saline helps replace the lost salts like chloride, sodium, and potassium.

The key components of this saline are:

  • Glucose (from rice): Helps sodium and water absorption in the small intestine.
  • Sodium & Potassium: Replace lost salts during dehydration caused by diarrhea and vomiting.
  • Citrate: Corrects the acidosis caused by dehydration and diarrhea.
  • Rice (Carbohydrate): Converts into glucose, which is absorbed with salt, reducing the osmolarity of the solution and preventing further fluid loss.

Dosage & Administration

For dehydration caused by diarrhea:

  • 6 months to 2 years: 50 to 100 ml (10 to 20 teaspoons)
  • 2 years to 9 years: 100 to 200 ml (20 to 40 teaspoons)
  • 10 years and above: 250 to 500 ml (1 to 2 glasses)

How to prepare:

  • For 250 ml saline: Add 250 ml (one glass) of hot boiled water to a clean jar. Mix one full sachet of saline powder until CS 1000ml turns into a milky white solution. Give the solution to the patient as per the recommended dose.
  • For 500 ml saline: Add 500 ml (two glasses) of hot boiled water to a clean jar. Mix one full sachet of saline powder until CS 1000ml turns into a milky white solution. Give the solution to the patient as per the recommended dose.

Advice:

  • Discard any unused solution after 5 hours.
  • Do not heat or boil the solution again.
  • Use a clean spoon to mix the solution before giving CS 1000ml to the patient.
