Indications
Cutisone Ointment is used to relieve inflammation and itching caused by conditions like eczema or dermatitis that respond to corticosteroids.
Pharmacology
Cutisone Ointment is a glucocorticoid with strong anti-inflammatory effects when applied to the skin. Cutisone Ointment has low impact on the HPA-axis, which means Cutisone Ointment works effectively without affecting other parts of the body as much. Cutisone Ointment attaches strongly to glucocorticoid receptors in the skin, which helps reduce inflammation. The drug works best when used regularly, with full effect seen within 10 hours of use.
Dosage & Administration
Cream: Apply a thin layer to the affected areas once daily.
Ointment: Apply a thin layer to the affected areas twice daily.
Interaction
No information is available.
Contraindications
Cutisone Ointment is not recommended for people with rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, skin infections, hypersensitivity to any ingredient, or those with infections from fungi or bacteria. Cutisone Ointment should also not be used in children under one year of age.
Side Effects
Cutisone Ointment is generally well tolerated. However, some people may experience burning or itching. If signs of an allergic reaction occur, stop using Cutisone Ointment immediately. Prolonged use can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, or changes in skin color. There is also a risk of secondary infections, especially when used with occlusive dressings. In rare cases, excessive use of corticosteroids may lead to symptoms of excessive cortisol in the body, particularly in infants and children.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cutisone Ointment should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits to the mother outweigh any risks to the baby. The effects of this drug on breast milk are not fully known. If used while breastfeeding, the risks to both mother and baby should be carefully considered.
Precautions & Warnings
While Cutisone Ointment has a low risk of being absorbed into the bloodstream, long-term or high-dose use, especially in infants and children, can lead to adrenal suppression. Use with care on the face or in skin folds, as these areas are more likely to show side effects like thinning skin. If a skin infection develops, stop using the medication and treat the infection appropriately. Always clean the skin before applying a new dressing, especially in cases of infection.
Overdose Effects
Cutisone Ointment is very unlikely to experience an overdose, but chronic misuse may cause symptoms of excessive cortisol. In such cases, stop using the medication. Oral ingestion of the cream or ointment is unlikely due to its very low absorption in the body.
Therapeutic Class
Topical corticosteroid preparation.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze.
