Indications
Cyclid 5 is used to treat all forms of parkinsonian syndrome. Cyclid 5 helps with symptoms of idiopathic (paralysis agitants), postencephalitic, and arteriosclerotic parkinsonism. Cyclid 5 also helps control troubling symptoms caused by neuroleptic drugs, such as pseudoparkinsonism, acute dystonic reactions, and akathisia.
Pharmacology
Cyclid 5 is an antimuscarinic agent that helps treat parkinsonism with low toxicity. This synthetic drug works by balancing the levels of cholinergic activity in the brain, which can be disrupted in parkinsonism due to low dopamine levels. Cyclid 5 is quickly absorbed by the body and has a rapid effect, acting within 5 to 20 minutes after intravenous use, with effects lasting up to 4 hours.
Dosage & Administration
Tablet: Cyclid 5 should be taken orally, preferably after meals.
Parkinsonism: Start with 2.5 mg three times a day. Increase to 5 mg three times a day and occasionally 5 mg at bedtime. Adjust the dosage as tolerated until reaching a total daily dose of 20 to 30 mg, divided into 3 to 4 doses.
Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms: Start with 2.5 mg three times a day. Increase by 2.5 mg per day as needed and tolerated.
IM or IV injection: 5-10 mg, repeated after 20 minutes if necessary. The maximum dose is 20 mg per day.
Interaction
The anticholinergic effects of procyclidine may be increased by other anticholinergic drugs like amantadine. Procyclidine can also reduce the absorption of ketoconazole when taken together.
Contraindications
Cyclid 5 should be used cautiously in children and elderly patients. Cyclid 5 is also advised to be cautious in people with diarrhea, heart disease, glaucoma, urinary retention, or liver/kidney problems. The safety of using procyclidine during pregnancy has not been established, and there is no data available about its excretion in breast milk.
Side Effects
At usual doses, the main side effect is a dry mouth. Other side effects may include dilated pupils, blurred vision, stomach issues (nausea, vomiting, constipation), and sometimes a rash or muscle weakness. High doses can cause dizziness, confusion, or hallucinations. Adjusting the dose and taking the medication after meals can help reduce these effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The use of this drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be carefully considered, weighing the potential benefits against any risks to the mother and child.
Precautions & Warnings
Special care should be taken in cases of liver or kidney problems, as well as in children, elderly people, and during pregnancy or lactation. People with mental health issues may experience worsening symptoms when taking procyclidine for neuroleptic side effects. Cyclid 5 should not be stopped suddenly, as this can cause symptoms of Parkinsonism to return.
