Indications
Cynocort is used for various conditions when oral therapy isn’t possible. Cynocort is given as an injection for the following:
- Rheumatic disorders: Used in cases like acute gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis to manage flare-ups.
- Allergic conditions: For severe allergies that don’t respond to other treatments, including asthma, dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis.
- Skin diseases: Conditions like severe skin reactions (e.g., pemphigus, severe erythema multiforme).
- Endocrine problems: Used for hormone deficiencies like adrenal insufficiency and some thyroid conditions.
- Gut issues: Helps during flare-ups of regional enteritis and ulcerative colitis.
- Blood disorders: Treats conditions like autoimmune hemolytic anemia and certain types of thrombocytopenia.
- Cancer treatment: For managing symptoms in leukemia and lymphoma.
- Nerve problems: Helps with acute episodes of multiple sclerosis and brain swelling.

Pharmacology
Cynocort is a synthetic corticosteroid that reduces inflammation. Cynocort is insoluble in water but dissolves well in alcohol. This drug is used in both systemic and local treatments and has a long-lasting effect, providing relief for several weeks. The drug works by suppressing adrenal function temporarily, and its effects last for about 30 to 40 days after one injection.
Dosage & Administration
General: The dosage ranges from 2.5 mg to 100 mg per day, depending on the condition being treated. For serious conditions, higher doses may be required. The injection should be done using strict aseptic techniques and shaken before use.
Systemic use: An initial dose of 60 mg is typically injected into the gluteal muscle. This can be adjusted based on patient response. In children, the initial dose is based on weight, ranging from 0.11 to 1.6 mg/kg/day.
Local use: For joint treatment, the injection typically ranges from 2.5 mg to 40 mg depending on the size of the joint.
Interaction
Cynocort can interact with various medications, including:
- Aminoglutethimide: Can reduce corticosteroid effectiveness.
- Potassium-depleting drugs: Can lead to low potassium levels.
- Antibiotics: Certain antibiotics can affect the clearance of corticosteroids.
- Diabetes medications: May require adjustments as the drug can increase blood sugar levels.
Contraindications
Cynocort should not be used by people who are allergic to any of its components. Cynocort is also not suitable for people with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
