Indications

Cyphos -1gm is used to treat certain types of cancer, often alongside other chemotherapy drugs. Cyphos -1gm can be effective for conditions like malignant lymphomas (Stage III and IV), Hodgkin’s disease, different types of leukemia (such as chronic lymphocytic and acute myelogenous leukemia), multiple myeloma, neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma, and breast cancer. Cyphos -1gm may also help with a kidney condition in children called “minimal change” nephrotic syndrome, but only in selected cases and not as the primary treatment.

Pharmacology

Cyphos -1gm works by turning into active forms in the liver, which then interfere with the growth of fast-growing cancer cells. The exact way Cyphos -1gm works is by affecting the DNA in tumor cells. Cyphos -1gm is well absorbed when taken by mouth, and its active ingredients are mainly cleared by the kidneys. The drug is partly broken down into other substances, and while Cyphos -1gm can accumulate in patients with kidney problems, this has not been shown to increase toxicity.

Dosage & Administration

For Cancer Treatment: For adults and children, the dosage usually starts at 40-50 mg/kg given intravenously over 2 to 5 days, depending on the condition. There are other regimens, such as 10-15 mg/kg every 7 to 10 days. The oral dosage is typically 1-5 mg/kg/day for both starting and maintenance doses. Dosage adjustments are made based on the effectiveness of the treatment and the white blood cell count.

For Kidney Disease in Children: The recommended oral dose is 2.5-3 mg/kg daily for 60 to 90 days. Long-term use can lead to fertility issues in males.

Interaction

Taking high doses of phenobarbital can increase the rate of metabolism of this drug. Cyphos -1gm can also increase the effects of succinylcholine, a muscle relaxant used during surgery. If you’re scheduled for surgery, inform the anesthesiologist if you’ve had cyclophosphamide treatment within 10 days.

Contraindications

Cyphos -1gm should not be used in patients with severely low white blood cell counts or who have had an allergic reaction to Cyphos -1gm in the past.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and sometimes abdominal pain. Cyphos -1gm can also cause hair loss, which usually grows back after treatment. Skin rashes, changes in skin color or nails, and in rare cases, severe skin reactions may occur. Blood count problems like low white blood cells and platelets are also possible. Kidney and lung problems may occur in some cases.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Cyphos -1gm is not safe to use during pregnancy, as Cyphos -1gm can harm the developing baby. Cyphos -1gm also passes into breast milk, so nursing mothers should decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop the medication, depending on the drug’s importance to the mother.

Precautions & Warnings

People with low blood cell counts, liver or kidney problems, or a history of cancer treatments should be closely monitored while using this drug.

Overdose Effects

There is no specific antidote for overdose. Treatment involves supportive care, including managing any infections, blood cell problems, or heart toxicity.
