Indications
Cytomis 600 is used to prevent stomach and duodenal ulcers in people taking NSAIDs who are at high risk of complications. Cytomis 600 is also used to heal existing ulcers caused by NSAIDs, heal ulcers without NSAID use, induce labor, and prevent or treat postpartum bleeding.
Pharmacology
Cytomis 600 is absorbed in the body and quickly changes into its active form, which works in the body. The acid form of Misoprostol is less effective when taken with food or with certain antacids. Cytomis 600 helps reduce stomach acid and protects the stomach lining, especially when NSAIDs reduce protective prostaglandins. Cytomis 600 can increase protective substances like mucus and bicarbonate in the stomach, which may help prevent damage caused by NSAIDs, though Cytomis 600’s unclear if Cytomis 600 works through one effect or both.
Dosage & Administration
For gastric and duodenal ulcers: 800 mcg daily in 2-4 doses with meals and at bedtime. Treatment should last at least 4 weeks, up to 8 weeks if needed.
To prevent NSAID-induced ulcers: 200 mcg 2-4 times daily with NSAIDs. If this dose is not tolerated, 100 mcg can be used.
For labor induction: Place 25 mcg in the vagina, repeating every 6 hours until reaching 200 mcg total. Monitor heart rate and contractions. Alternatively, 100 mcg orally. If labor does not start, give 100-200 mcg every 4 hours until labor starts, up to 6 doses. Oxytocin can be used 4 hours after the last dose. Notify the physician if signs of fetal distress or abnormal contractions appear.
For postpartum bleeding prevention: 600 mcg orally right after delivery.
For treating postpartum bleeding: 600 mcg orally or 1000 mcg rectally.
Interaction
There are no significant interactions with cardiac, lung, CNS drugs, or NSAIDs. However, the bioavailability of Misoprostol may decrease when taken with high doses of antacids.
Contraindications
Cytomis 600 is contraindicated for those allergic to prostaglandins and during pregnancy.
Side Effects
Cytomis 600 is generally well tolerated. Some people may experience stomach issues like diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, or dizziness. Taking Cytomis 600 after meals and at bedtime, as well as avoiding antacids with magnesium, can help reduce these side effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cytomis 600 is not safe during pregnancy due to its potential to cause miscarriage. Cytomis 600 should not be used unless absolutely necessary, such as when NSAID therapy is required and there is a high risk of stomach or duodenal ulcers. Women of childbearing age must use reliable contraception during treatment. Cytomis 600 may pass into breast milk, but its effects on nursing infants are not well studied, so Cytomis 600 is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Cytomis 600 should not be used by pregnant women and must only be prescribed to women of childbearing age if they need NSAID therapy. Women must confirm they are not pregnant and use effective contraception during treatment.
For labor induction, the pregnancy must be 38 weeks or more. Induction should not occur in cases of acute fetal distress, placenta previa, or unexplained bleeding. The fetus should also be in the correct position for delivery.
Overdose Effects
Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, tremors, seizures, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever. Treatment should focus on supportive care.
