Indications
Dalacin is used to treat infections caused by certain types of bacteria, such as Streptococci, Staphylococci, and Pneumococci. These infections may affect the upper or lower respiratory system, skin, bones, joints, pelvic organs, abdomen, blood, or heart. Dalacin is also used for dental infections and as an alternative treatment in combination with other medicines for malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
Pharmacology
Dalacin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: For serious infections, take 150 mg to 300 mg every six hours. For more severe infections, 300 mg to 450 mg every six hours. For bone or joint infections, diabetic foot infections, 300 mg capsules can be taken 3-4 times daily.
Pediatric patients: For children under 10 kg, 1/2 teaspoon (37.5 mg) three times a day is the recommended dose. For more severe infections, the dose increases to 17-25 mg per kg body weight, divided into 3 or 4 doses a day.
When using Clindamycin by injection, the dosage for adults varies between 600 mg and 4800 mg per day, depending on the severity of the infection. Doses should be given in 2 to 4 equal parts. For neonates (under 1 month), the dosage is 15 to 20 mg per kg body weight per day, divided into 3 to 4 doses.
Interaction
Dalacin is known to enhance the effects of other muscle relaxants, so care is needed when combined. Dalacin should not be used with erythromycin, as the two medicines can interfere with each other.
Contraindications
Dalacin is not recommended for people who have had an allergic reaction to Dalacin or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Common side effects include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, and itching. Serious reactions like esophageal ulcers may occur in some cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Dalacin is categorized as a pregnancy B drug, meaning Dalacin may be used during pregnancy if needed. Dalacin can pass into breast milk, so Dalacin is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers unless necessary.
Precautions & Warnings
Dalacin should be used carefully in people with a history of gastrointestinal issues, especially colitis, and only under medical supervision.
Overdose Effects
Taking too much Clindamycin can cause side effects similar to normal doses, such as stomach upset, but in higher amounts, Dalacin could lead to severe symptoms. In such cases, gastric lavage is recommended, as dialysis does not help remove the medicine from the body.
