Indications

Dana is used to treat endometriosis, benign breast disease, heavy periods, enlarged breast tissue in men, and to thin the uterus lining before surgery.

Pharmacology

Dana works by reducing certain hormones in the body, which helps slow down estrogen production. This leads to less hormone activity in the ovaries, reducing symptoms like pain and tissue growth. Dana also affects how the body processes steroids and proteins, helping manage conditions like endometriosis and breast disease.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: Usually taken in 2 to 4 doses daily. For endometriosis, 200-800 mg per day for up to 9 months. For heavy periods, 100-200 mg per day for 3 months. For breast conditions, 100-400 mg per day for 3-6 months. For enlarged male breast tissue, 200-400 mg per day for up to 6 months.

Children: Not recommended.

Interaction

Dana may affect blood sugar levels and interact with insulin. Dana can also reduce the effectiveness of certain medications like birth control pills, migraine medicine, and blood pressure drugs. Dana may increase the effects of medications like cyclosporine and some seizure treatments.

Contraindications

Dana should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or by people with liver, kidney, or heart problems. Dana is also not recommended for those with a history of blood clots, hormone-sensitive cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or an allergy to the drug.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include nausea, dizziness, skin rashes, mood changes, anxiety, weight gain, headaches, irregular periods, voice changes, acne, and hair growth. Some people may also experience swelling, muscle pain, or changes in blood levels.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Dana should not be taken during pregnancy as Dana may affect a developing baby. Dana is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers, as Dana can pass into breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings

Dana should be used with caution in people with heart, liver, or kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, or a history of blood clots. If signs of voice changes or unusual hair growth appear, the medicine should be stopped immediately.

Overdose Effects

There is limited data on overdose, but taking too much may cause severe hormonal side effects or worsen existing symptoms.
