Indications

Daonil is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Pharmacology

Daonil works by helping the pancreas release insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels. This only works if the pancreas has healthy beta cells. Over time, the effect may decrease, but Daonil still lowers blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Daonil also helps the kidneys clear extra water from the body.

Dosage & Administration

Adult & Elderly: The starting dose is usually 2.5 to 5 mg daily, taken with breakfast or the first main meal. For people more sensitive to the medication, a dose of 1.25 mg may be used. The typical maintenance dose ranges from 1.25 to 20 mg daily, which can be taken once or in divided doses. Dosage increases should be made gradually based on blood sugar levels, with no more than 2.5 mg added each week. Doses over 20 mg daily are not recommended.

Pediatric patients: This medication is not recommended for children.

Interaction

Some drugs can increase the effect of Glibenclamide and may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), including NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, fluoxetine, clarithromycin, and certain other medications. If these are used, the patient should be closely monitored for low blood sugar. Some other drugs, such as thiazides, corticosteroids, and thyroid products, can raise blood sugar and make the medicine less effective.

Contraindications

Daonil is not recommended for people who are allergic to Daonil or any of its ingredients, or for those with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. These conditions should be treated with insulin.

Side Effects

Severe low blood sugar reactions, including coma, seizures, or other neurological problems, are rare.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Daonil is not known if this medicine is safe to use during pregnancy, but Daonil has been used for many years without noticeable problems. Animal studies show no harm, but Daonil is unclear if Daonil passes into breast milk. Other similar drugs have been found in breast milk, so Daonil is possible Glibenclamide may also transfer to milk.

Precautions & Warnings

This drug can cause severe low blood sugar, so Daonil is important to carefully select patients and follow the prescribed dosage to avoid this risk.
