Indications

Daunobin is used with other approved anticancer drugs to help treat acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (myelogenous, monocytic, erythroid) in adults and acute lymphocytic leukemia in both children and adults.

Pharmacology

Daunobin works by stopping the growth of cancer cells in different ways. Daunobin binds to DNA and prevents certain enzymes from repairing DNA, which leads to breaks in the DNA strands. This damages the cancer cells and helps treat a variety of tumors.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The drug is given intravenously on specific days, with dosages based on age and body size. For adults under 60, Daunobin is given 45 mg/m² on days 1, 2, and 3, along with cytosine arabinoside. For adults 60 and older, the dose is reduced to 30 mg/m² on the same days.

Pediatric patients: For children with acute lymphocytic leukemia, the dosage is based on body size, and the treatment typically lasts for several courses. Special calculations are made for younger children based on weight.

Interaction

Daunobin should not be used in patients who have had previous treatments with similar drugs like Doxorubicin, as this increases the risk of heart problems. Daunobin can also cause problems when taken with certain other medications like cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, or other myelosuppressive drugs.

Contraindications

Daunobin is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to Daunorubicin or any of its ingredients.

Side effects include damage to bone marrow, heart problems, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, diarrhea, and pain at the injection site. Rarely, allergic reactions, fever, and chills may occur. High uric acid levels can also be seen, especially in leukemia patients.
