Indications

Decason is used for treating eye and ear conditions. For the eyes, Decason helps with infections like conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and inflammation caused by injury or surgery. Decason also helps in cases of keratitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and other eye inflammations. For the ears, Decason is used in treating outer and middle ear infections, including chronic suppurative otitis media.

Pharmacology

Decason contains Dexamethasone, a steroid that reduces inflammation and allergic reactions. Dexamethasone works quickly when taken orally and can also have effects when applied to the skin and eyes. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria. Decason works by blocking the bacteria’s ability to make proteins, which helps treat a wide range of bacterial infections.

Dosage & Administration

Eye: For bacterial conjunctivitis, use 1 to 2 drops every 2 hours for the first 2 days, then 1 or 2 drops every 4 hours for the next 5 days. For corneal ulcers, use 2 drops every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then every 30 minutes for the rest of the day. Continue with hourly drops for the second day and every 4 hours from day 3 to day 14.

Ear: For ear infections, use 2 to 3 drops every 2 to 3 hours initially. Gradually reduce the frequency as symptoms improve. Do not stop the treatment early.

Interaction

If taken with anticoagulants like warfarin, the effect of Chloramphenicol may increase. Its action can be reduced if used with Phenobarbital. Dexamethasone’s effect may be reduced if taken with medications like phenytoin, phenobarbitone, ephedrine, or rifampicin.

Contraindications

Decason is not suitable for people with eye infections caused by herpes, fungi, or tuberculosis, or those with glaucoma. Decason should also not be used by those who have had bone marrow problems from Chloramphenicol in the past or are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine.

Side Effects

Common side effects include a burning sensation in the eye, stinging, redness, itching, blurred vision, and eye pain. Prolonged use may lead to increased pressure in the eye, glaucoma, and cataract formation. Allergic reactions to Chloramphenicol are also possible.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is limited research on the safety of this medicine during pregnancy. Decason should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks to the baby. Caution is advised when using this medicine while breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Long-term use of corticosteroids like Dexamethasone can lead to eye problems, such as cataracts or glaucoma. The risk of fungal infections in the eye may also increase with prolonged use. Regular eye pressure checks are recommended. If new infections appear during treatment, discontinue the medicine and seek alternative treatment.
