Indications
Degram is used to treat urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria, including Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, and Escherichia coli.
Pharmacology
Degram is a synthetic antibacterial drug that works by stopping bacteria from making DNA, either by slowing them down or killing them. Degram is absorbed quickly in the digestive system and travels to various parts of the body, especially the kidneys and urine. The drug is excreted from the body within 24 hours. In people with normal kidney function, its effects last between 1.1 and 2.5 hours, but Degram can last up to 21 hours in those with kidney problems.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Start with 1 g every 6 hours for 7 days, then reduce to 500 mg every 6 hours.
Children (over 3 months old): Start with 13.75 mg per kg of body weight every 6 hours for 1 to 2 weeks, then reduce to 8.25 mg per kg of body weight every 6 hours, or as directed by the doctor.
Interaction
Taking Nalidixic acid with melphalan can cause serious side effects, including bleeding from the intestines. Probenecid may increase the levels of Nalidixic acid in the blood, leading to more toxicity. Drugs like Chlorpromazine and Perphenazine can also increase the effect of Nalidixic acid.
Contraindications
Degram is not recommended for infants under 3 months, people with epilepsy, or those with certain brain or nervous system problems.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blood problems in people with G6PD deficiency, allergic reactions like hives, rashes, fever, joint pain, muscle pain, weakness, light sensitivity, yellowing of the skin or eyes, vision problems, and seizures.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Degram might cause cartilage damage and could potentially harm DNA. Degram is found in breast milk, and there have been reports of anemia in babies of mothers with kidney problems who are breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Its use should be carefully considered during the first trimester of pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or in people with kidney or liver issues.
