Indications
Delkof Plus is used to temporarily relieve symptoms caused by the common cold, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), or other upper respiratory allergies. These symptoms include: cough due to minor throat or bronchial irritation, runny nose, sneezing, itching of the nose or throat, itchy and watery eyes, nasal congestion, and swelling in the nasal passages.
Pharmacology
Delkof Plus is a combination of three active ingredients: an antitussive, a decongestant, and an antihistamine. Dextromethorphan is a non-narcotic antitussive that works on the cough center in the brain. Although related to morphine, Delkof Plus has no pain-relieving or addictive properties, and Delkof Plus does not cause much drowsiness. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that helps shrink blood vessels in the nasal passages to relieve congestion. Triprolidine is an antihistamine that helps reduce symptoms caused by histamine release, such as sneezing and itching. Delkof Plus may cause some drowsiness as well.
Dosage & Administration
Adults & Children 12 years and older: Take 1 teaspoon (5 ml) every 4 hours or as directed by a doctor.
Children 6 to under 12 years: Take ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) every 4 hours or as directed by a doctor.
Children 2 to 6 years: Use with caution and as advised by a doctor.
Children below 2 years: This medicine should not be used in children under 2 years old.
Interaction
Taking certain medications like MAO inhibitors with this medicine can cause serious side effects. Avoid using isocarboxazid, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine during treatment. Most MAO inhibitors should also not be taken for two weeks before using this medicine. Be cautious if you are taking antihistamines (such as diphenhydramine), antispasmodics, beta blockers, Parkinson’s disease medications, anti-seizure drugs, sleeping medications, muscle relaxants, or psychiatric drugs.
Contraindications
Delkof Plus should not be used by people with liver disease, asthma, or those who are taking MAO inhibitors or have recently stopped them. Delkof Plus is also not recommended for people with severe high blood pressure or coronary artery disease, or if there is a known allergy to any of the ingredients.
Side Effects
Delkof Plus may cause drowsiness, dizziness, and constipation. Other side effects may include stomach discomfort. There is no evidence of physical dependence. Less common side effects could include high blood pressure, dry mouth, restlessness, palpitations, skin rashes, difficulty breathing, thickened mucus, mental confusion, or blood problems.
Pregnancy & Lactation
As with other medications, Delkof Plus is best to avoid using Delkof Plus during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor.
Precautions & Warnings
This medicine may cause drowsiness. If affected, avoid driving or operating machinery. Avoid alcohol while using this medicine. Use with caution in people with epilepsy, enlarged prostate, glaucoma, liver disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, overactive thyroid, stomach ulcers, or bladder problems. If symptoms don’t improve within a week or are accompanied by high fever, contact a doctor.
Overdose Effects
If overdose occurs, immediate hospital treatment is recommended. Overdose may cause breathing problems, mental confusion, hallucinations, and seizures. Treatment may include stomach pumping and sedatives like diazepam. Severe overdose of phenylephrine can cause high blood pressure, and treatment may involve using a blood pressure-lowering medication like phentolamine and treating slow heart rate with atropine.
