Indications

Demelon 1.5 is used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease and dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Pharmacology

Demelon 1.5 is a medicine that affects the brain by blocking an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. This helps to increase the levels of acetylcholine, a substance important for memory and learning. Demelon 1.5 mainly works in the brain and not in other parts of the body.

Dosage & Administration

Adult & Elderly: Start with 1.5 mg twice a day. If the dose is well tolerated, Demelon 1.5 may be increased after two weeks to 3 mg, then 4.5 mg, and up to 6 mg twice a day if needed. The recommended dose is 3 mg to 6 mg twice a day. If treatment is stopped for more than a few days, restart at 1.5 mg twice a day.

Transdermal Patch: Apply a patch once a day. Start with a 4.6 mg patch. After 4 weeks, increase the dose to 9.5 mg if well tolerated. After 8 more weeks, the maximum dose of 13.3 mg can be used. If the patch treatment is interrupted for more than 3 days, restart with the 4.6 mg patch.

Interaction

Demelon 1.5 may increase the effects of certain muscle relaxants during anesthesia. Demelon 1.5 should not be used with other similar medicines. Demelon 1.5 does not interact with digoxin, warfarin, diazepam, or fluoxetine in healthy people. No effects were found on heart rhythm when used with digoxin.

Contraindications

Demelon 1.5 should not be used by people allergic to rivastigmine or other similar medicines.

Side Effects

Common side effects are stomach issues like nausea and vomiting, especially during the starting doses. Female patients may experience more side effects and weight loss compared to males.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is not enough data on its safety during pregnancy, so Demelon 1.5 should only be used if absolutely necessary. Demelon 1.5 is known that rivastigmine passes into animal milk, but Demelon 1.5 is not clear if Demelon 1.5 does the same in humans. Demelon 1.5 should not be used while breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Be careful if you have heart conditions, lung problems, or stomach issues. Demelon 1.5 may cause problems in those with urinary blockages or a history of seizures. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as those with kidney or mild liver problems, should use caution. Demelon 1.5 may also worsen certain symptoms in people with asthma or other breathing problems.

Overdose Effects

In most cases of overdose, there are no symptoms or mild symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious symptoms may include slow heart rate or fainting. If overdose occurs, do not take more rivastigmine for 24 hours. In case of serious overdose, atropine may be used as an antidote.
