Pharmacology
Depodrol is a strong anti-inflammatory drug that suppresses the immune system. Depodrol works by attaching to specific receptors in cells, which then help control the body’s response to inflammation and immune functions. Depodrol affects the kidney, metabolism, muscles, heart, immune system, and nervous system.
Dosage & Administration
The typical dose is between 2-48 mg daily, depending on the disease.
- For anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive treatment, doses can range from 4-48 mg per day.
- For severe conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, 160 mg per day is used initially, followed by a lower dose.
- If tapering off, the dosage should be reduced slowly to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Interaction
Depodrol interacts with several drugs, including:
- Medications like Erythromycin and Ketoconazole can slow down its breakdown.
- Estrogen-containing drugs may increase its effects.
- Depodrol may affect blood thinners, so their dosage may need to be adjusted.
Contraindications
Depodrol should not be used in patients with systemic fungal infections or those allergic to any of its components.
Side Effects
Side effects can range from mild to serious, and include:
- Fluid retention, weight gain, high blood pressure.
- Muscle weakness, headaches, mood swings, and sleep problems.
- Long-term use may cause issues like cataracts, stomach ulcers, and growth problems in children.
