Form: Eye Drop

Generic Name: Dexamethasone + Moxifloxacin eye prep

Company: Aristopharma Limited

MRP:৳ 250.0   (5ml drop)

Is Antibiotic: Yes

Indications

Dexamox is used to treat allergic non-infectious blepharitis and conjunctivitis, non-infectious keratitis, punctate keratitis, and disciform keratitis (if the corneal surface is intact). Dexamox also treats inflammation of the anterior uvea (iritis, iridocyclitis), scleritis, episcleritis, and myositis. Additionally, Dexamox helps manage post-operative care after cataract surgery, strabismus surgery, and other ocular surgeries.

Pharmacology

Dexamox is a cortisone derivative that works by having a strong effect due to the presence of a methyl group in the 16-alpha position and a fluorine atom in the 9-alpha position. This makes Dexamox 30 times more anti-inflammatory and 8-10 times more effective than hydrocortisone. Like other glucocorticoids, Dexamox reduces allergic reactions, swelling, and cell growth. After applying a single drop of 0.1% solution, therapeutic levels of Dexamethasone are found in the cornea and aqueous humor within 15-30 minutes. These levels stay for 4-6 hours. Dexamox works by blocking the enzyme phospholipase A2, the first step in making prostaglandins, and also stops neutrophils from moving into the site of inflammation.

Dosage & Administration

For the ophthalmic solution: Put 1 drop in the eye 3-5 times a day. In more serious cases, you can use 1 drop every hour if needed.

For the ophthalmic ointment: Apply a small amount in the eye 3-4 times a day. Close your eyes slowly without blinking and keep them closed for 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce the dose once you see improvement.

Interaction

Specific drug interaction studies have not been carried out with this medicine.

Contraindications

Dexamox should not be used if there is an injury or ulcer on the cornea, especially if caused by bacterial or viral infections (like herpes simplex or vaccinia). Dexamox is also not recommended for purulent infections of the conjunctiva or eyelids, tuberculosis, fungal infections, or glaucoma.

Side Effects

In patients who are sensitive to corticosteroids, using Dexamox for several weeks may cause a temporary rise in eye pressure. Regular pressure checks are important to monitor this.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Animal studies have shown that dexamethasone may harm the fetus. However, there are no controlled human studies. Dexamox should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks to the unborn child.

Precautions & Warnings

Corticosteroids can hide, activate, or worsen an eye infection. If you don’t see improvement after a few days, you should try a different treatment. Make sure not to touch the tip of the dropper to any surface to avoid contaminating the solution or ointment.

Overdose Effects

Dexamox is unlikely to cause overdose if applied locally or taken accidentally by mouth.
