Indications

Dormax is used for short-term treatment of insomnia and for sedation before surgical or diagnostic procedures.

Pharmacology

Dormax works through the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps relax the muscles, sedate the body, and cause sleep, anesthesia, and amnesia. Dormax enhances GABA’s effect by increasing the frequency of chloride channel openings in the central nervous system, particularly in the heart and muscles.

Dosage & Administration

Oral dosage:

For adults: 7.5-15 mg daily.

For elderly or weak patients: 7.5 mg daily.

For premedication: 15 mg should be taken 30-60 minutes before the procedure.

Intravenous administration:

For endoscopic or cardiovascular procedures in healthy adults: 2.5 mg. For severely ill or elderly patients: 1-1.5 mg.

For induction of anesthesia: 10-15 mg.

Intramuscular administration:

For adults: 0.07-0.1 mg/kg body weight (usually 5 mg).

For children: 0.15-0.20 mg/kg.

For elderly or weak patients: 0.025-0.05 mg/kg.

Rectal administration for children:

0.35-0.45 mg/kg 20-30 minutes before anesthesia.

Interaction

Dormax can increase the sedative effects of other medications like neuroleptics, tranquilizers, antidepressants, sleep aids, painkillers, anesthetics, antipsychotics, anti-anxiety drugs, anti-epileptic drugs, and sedative antihistamines.

Contraindications

Dormax should not be used by people with severe breathing problems, severe liver problems, myasthenia gravis, sleep apnea, or a known allergy to benzodiazepines or any of its components.

Side Effects

At the start of treatment, drowsiness, confusion, fatigue, headache, and muscle weakness may occur but usually disappear after a few doses. After IV or IM use, changes in vital signs like breathing problems, low blood pressure, and heart rate changes may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Dormax should be avoided during pregnancy unless no other options are available. Since Dormax passes into breast milk, Dormax should not be used by breastfeeding mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Dormax should be given very slowly through IV.

Overdose Effects

Overdosing may cause coma, loss of reflexes, breathing problems, and heart issues. These can be treated with the benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil.
