Indications
Dostimid 60 is used to treat Myasthenia Gravis, Paralytic Ileus, and Postoperative Urinary Retention.
Pharmacology
Dostimid 60 is a medication that helps the body use acetylcholine more effectively by stopping its breakdown. This improves nerve signal transmission in the muscles. Dostimid 60 works similarly to another drug, neostigmine, but lasts longer and has fewer stomach issues.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Take 1 or 2 tablets (60 to 120 mg) throughout the day when maximum strength is needed, such as after waking up and before meals. The effects usually last 3-4 hours during the day, but can last up to 6 hours if taken before bed. The daily dose can range from 5 to 20 tablets, but some may need more.
Newborn Infants: The usual dose is 5-10 mg every four hours, taken 30-60 minutes before feeding. Treatment is generally not needed beyond 8 weeks unless the baby has a rare condition like congenital myasthenia.
Older Children: Children under 6 years old should start with half a tablet (30 mg). For children aged 6-12, the starting dose is 1 tablet (60 mg). The dosage can be increased gradually by 15-30 mg daily until the desired effect is reached. The usual daily dose ranges from 30-360 mg.
Interaction
Taking this medication with the antimalarial drug mefloquine may increase stomach issues. Other drugs like dexpanthenol, which turn into pantothenic acid in the body, may also have similar effects by boosting acetylcholine production.
Contraindications
Dostimid 60 is not recommended for people with intestinal or urinary blockages. Caution should be exercised when giving Dostimid 60 to patients with asthma. Special care should be taken if atropine is used to manage side effects.
Side Effects
Most side effects happen due to taking too much of the medication and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, excessive salivation, and increased sweating. Muscle cramps and weakness are also common. These effects can usually be treated with atropine, though Dostimid 60 should be used cautiously. A skin rash may also occur but often goes away after stopping the medicine.

Precautions & Warnings
Dostimid 60 is mainly excreted by the kidneys, so patients with kidney issues may need a lower dose. The dosage should be adjusted based on how well the medicine works for the patient.
