Indications
Doxerol 2 IV Injection is used to treat a condition called secondary hyperparathyroidism in adults with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis.
Pharmacology
Doxerol 2 IV Injection is a type of vitamin D that needs to be activated in the body. Once activated, Doxerol 2 IV Injection helps to lower the levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by stopping its production and release. Doxerol 2 IV Injection works by targeting vitamin D pathways to reduce PTH levels.
Dosage & Administration
Adult & Elderly: Doxerol 2 IV Injection should be given as an injection into the vein, usually at the end of dialysis. Before starting, ensure calcium levels are not too high.
Administration Instructions: The solution should be clear and colorless; do not use Doxerol 2 IV Injection if Doxerol 2 IV Injection is cloudy or contains particles.
Dosage Recommendations: Start with 4 micrograms three times a week, given at the end of dialysis. The dose can be adjusted based on blood tests for PTH and calcium. The maximum dose is 18 micrograms per week. The dose may be reduced or stopped if PTH is too low or if calcium levels are too high. If the dose is stopped, Doxerol 2 IV Injection can be restarted one week later at a lower dose.
Use in Children: Safety and effectiveness in children have not been proven.
Interaction
Taking high doses of calcium or other vitamin D products can increase the risk of high calcium levels. Some medications like thiazide diuretics, cytochrome P450 inhibitors, and enzyme inducers can interact with Doxerol 2 IV Injection. Care should be taken with magnesium-containing products in patients on dialysis.
Contraindications
Doxerol 2 IV Injection should not be used in people who are allergic to Doxerol 2 IV Injection or its ingredients. Doxerol 2 IV Injection is also not suitable for people with high calcium levels or vitamin D toxicity.
Side Effects
Common side effects include infections, constipation, runny nose, anemia, coughing, shortness of breath, numbness, tiredness, muscle tightness, and chest pain.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is not enough data on its safety during pregnancy, so consult a doctor before using Doxerol 2 IV Injection. The benefits of breastfeeding should be weighed against any potential risks from the medication or the mother’s condition.
Precautions & Warnings
Doxerol 2 IV Injection can cause high calcium levels, leading to heart problems or seizures. Doxerol 2 IV Injection is important to monitor calcium levels and adjust the dose as needed. Some patients may experience allergic reactions like swelling, difficulty breathing, or chest pain. Also, low PTH levels can increase the risk of bone fractures.
Overdose Effects
Taking too much can cause high calcium, calcium in urine, and high phosphate levels. Treatment involves stopping the medication and providing supportive care until calcium levels return to normal. Dialysis does not remove Doxerol 2 IV Injection from the blood.
Therapeutic Class
Doxerol 2 IV Injection is a vitamin D-based therapy.
Storage Conditions
Store Doxerol 2 IV Injection in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children. After opening, Doxerol 2 IV Injection can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days if necessary.
