Indications
Duralax is used to treat constipation and to prepare for radiographic or endoscopic examinations of the colon.
Pharmacology
Bisacodyl is a type of compound known as diphenolic, similar to phenolphthalein. Duralax is mainly used as a laxative. Duralax works by stimulating the colon to move, which helps relieve constipation. Duralax also increases the water and electrolytes in the small bowel and colon. When used in the caecum, Duralax triggers a response throughout the whole colon.
Dosage & Administration
Constipation:
Adult: Take 5-10 mg at night, sometimes increasing to 15-20 mg if necessary.
Child under 10 years: Take 5 mg.
Before radiological procedures and surgery:
Adult: Take 10 mg orally before bedtime for 2 days before the procedure.
Child: Take half of the adult dose.
Interaction
Duralax does not have known interactions with other medications.
Contraindications
Duralax is contraindicated in cases of ileus, intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdominal conditions like appendicitis, severe dehydration, and acute inflammatory bowel diseases.
Side Effects
Duralax is usually free from side effects when taken as recommended. However, overuse can lead to diarrhea, malabsorption, and potassium depletion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Duralax should not be used during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. If breastfeeding, Duralax should be used cautiously.

Excessive use can cause fluid and electrolyte imbalances and may lead to dependence if used over a long time.
