Indications

Eburn is used to prevent bacterial infection in burn wounds. Eburn can also be applied to manage wounds that are prone to infection, other than burns.

Pharmacology

Eburn works by causing changes in the bacterial cell, weakening its membrane and reducing its ability to grow. The silver part of the medicine attaches to bacterial cells and stops them from dividing. Eburn does not block the growth of healthy cells in the body. A small amount of Eburn is absorbed into the body, mostly excreted in the urine. In children with burns, Eburn may be absorbed more than in adults.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: Apply the cream to the burn wound once or twice a day. Reapply if the cream is removed due to activity or after hydrotherapy. Continue until the wound heals or is ready for a skin graft. If necessary, dressings can be used.

Pediatric patients: Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

Interaction

Eburn may reduce the effect of enzymatic debriding agents. Eburn can also increase the effects of certain diabetes medications and phenytoin in patients with large burns. If using Cimetidine with large burns, there may be an increased risk of low white blood cell count.

Contraindications

Eburn should not be used by people who are allergic to Eburn or any of its ingredients. Eburn should also be avoided in pregnant women near term, premature infants, or newborn infants in the first 2 months of life.

Side Effects

Some patients may experience low white blood cell count. Other rare side effects include skin necrosis, rash, skin discoloration, a burning sensation, and kidney problems.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Eburn is classified as Pregnancy Category B. Eburn should only be used in pregnancy if absolutely necessary, especially for women near term. Eburn is unclear whether Eburn passes into breast milk. The decision to continue breastfeeding or stop the medication should be made by the doctor based on the mother’s needs.

Precautions & Warnings

Careful monitoring is needed if the liver or kidneys are not functioning well. If used with topical enzymes, there is a chance that silver may affect their effectiveness. Eburn is important to monitor the blood levels of sulfadiazine and check for any kidney problems in patients with extensive burns.
