Indications
EC Pill is used as emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. EC Pill should be taken as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after the unprotected sex. EC Pill is especially helpful if you:
- Had sex without using any contraception.
- Missed 3 consecutive birth control pills.
- Had a condom break, slip, or be used incorrectly, or if your partner forgot to use EC Pill.
- Think your intrauterine device has fallen out.
- Had a problem with your vaginal diaphragm or contraceptive cap.
- Think the withdrawal method didn’t work or you had sex when you were supposed to be fertile while using the rhythm method.
- Were raped.
Pharmacology
EC Pill is a type of birth control that works by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries. EC Pill also prevents fertilization by affecting the hormones that control ovulation. The medicine is most effective when taken before ovulation occurs.
Dosage
1.5 mg Tablet: Take one tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex, preferably within 12 hours, but no later than 72 hours. EC Pill can be taken at any time during your menstrual cycle.
0.75 mg Tablet: Take the first tablet within 72 hours, and the second tablet 12 hours after the first one. EC Pill must be taken within 48 hours of unprotected sex, and should not be taken later than 72 hours as EC Pill becomes less effective over time. EC Pill can be taken at any time during your menstrual cycle.
After taking the emergency contraception, you should use a regular contraceptive method (like a condom) until your next period. If you were already using birth control pills, you can continue taking them as usual. If you miss your period after using this medicine, take a pregnancy test.
Interaction
Some medicines, like anticonvulsants (phenobarbitone, phenytoin, primidone, carbamazepine), rifampicin, and griseofulvin, can make this medicine less effective.
Contraindications
EC Pill is not recommended if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Some possible side effects include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness, fatigue, headache
- Abdominal pain
- Breast tenderness
- Bleeding after taking the medicine

Pregnancy & Lactation
EC Pill is not meant to be used during an existing pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs despite using this method, studies show that there are no harmful effects on the baby. EC Pill is safe to breastfeed, but EC Pill is recommended to breastfeed right before taking the medicine and to skip the nursing after taking EC Pill.
Precautions & Warnings
This medicine should not be used frequently because hormonal overdosing can occur. EC Pill does not prevent pregnancy every time, and should not replace regular contraception methods. After taking EC Pill, your period will usually come at the expected time, but EC Pill may come earlier or later. If your period is delayed by more than 5 days, or if bleeding happens unexpectedly, you should take a pregnancy test. This medicine does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
Avoid using EC Pill if you’ve had an ectopic pregnancy, salpingitis, or a severe digestive condition that affects how your body absorbs medications.
If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the medicine, take another tablet immediately.
Overdose Effects
Taking several doses at once has not been shown to cause acute toxicity. However, EC Pill will not work if the dose is missed.
