Indications
Emoli Moisturizing Lotion is used as an antimicrobial lotion to manage dry and itchy skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. This lotion can be applied directly to the skin and can also be used as a soap substitute.
Pharmacology
This product contains two types of active ingredients:
- Benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine dihydrochloride: These are antimicrobials that help fight bacteria on the skin that can make eczema worse and prevent infection caused by scratching itchy skin.
- Liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate: These are emollients that soften, moisturize, and protect the skin by locking in moisture and restoring the skin’s protective barrier. They also prevent dryness and irritation caused by soaps and other skin cleansers.
This lotion can be used with other treatments your doctor or pharmacist has recommended for dry skin.
Dosage & Administration
Adults, Children, and the Elderly: Apply the lotion to the affected skin areas as needed. Massage gently until absorbed. Emoli Moisturizing Lotion can also be used as a soap substitute in the bath or shower or for other cleansing purposes instead of regular soap or shower gel.
Interaction
This product is not known to interact with other medicines.
Contraindications
Emoli Moisturizing Lotion should not be used if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, liquid paraffin, isopropyl myristate, or any other ingredients in this lotion.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, this lotion may cause side effects, but not everyone will experience them. If you notice any of the following, stop using the lotion and get immediate medical help:
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Sudden red, itchy rash (hives) away from the applied area
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing
- Feeling faint or dizzy
- Strange metallic taste in the mouth
- Collapse
If you experience these signs, you may be having a serious allergic reaction. Rarely, the lotion can cause skin reactions like redness, irritation, or itching at the treated area, especially with excessive use in areas like the groin or nappy region.
Pregnancy & Lactation
This product can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The ingredients have been used safely in this and similar products for many years, but safety trials have not been conducted.
Precautions & Warnings
As with any product, severe allergic reactions are possible. Very rare cases of severe allergic reactions, such as a drop in blood pressure or unconsciousness, have been linked to chlorhexidine-containing products. Do not use this lotion if you’ve had reactions to chlorhexidine products in the past.
Do not smoke or go near open flames while using this product as Emoli Moisturizing Lotion can cause severe burns. Fabric (clothing, bedding, dressings, etc.) that has come into contact with the product may catch fire easily. Wash these fabrics carefully but note that the product may not be entirely removed.
For patients with very sensitive skin, Emoli Moisturizing Lotion is recommended to test the lotion on a small area first, especially for use on the face or with young children. Avoid getting the product in your eyes, especially when applying Emoli Moisturizing Lotion to the face.
When using the lotion as a soap substitute, be cautious as Emoli Moisturizing Lotion may make the surface slippery, which could cause accidents in the bath or shower.
