Indications

Favivir is used for treating novel or re-emerging influenza virus infections, especially when other influenza antiviral drugs are not effective or not strong enough.

Pharmacology

Favivir is a new antiviral medicine for influenza. Favivir is converted into favipiravir ribosyl triphosphate (favipiravir RTP) inside the body by an enzyme. Favipiravir RTP then blocks the RNA polymerase (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) of the influenza virus, stopping Favivir from multiplying. Unlike other antiviral medicines for influenza, Favivir works differently and is effective against all types and subtypes of human influenza A, B, and C viruses. Favivir also works against various strains of influenza, including avian and swine viruses.

Dosage & Administration

Adult dosage: Take 1600 mg twice a day on Day 1, then take 600 mg twice a day from Day 2 to Day 5, or follow the doctor’s directions. The total treatment duration is 5 days.

Interaction

In animal studies, decreased red blood cell production and increases in liver function markers like AST, ALP, ALT, and total bilirubin were observed. Favipiravir’s toxicity in humans is not fully known.

Contraindications

Favivir is not recommended for use in pregnant women or women who might be pregnant.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are diarrhea and increased blood uric acid levels.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Favivir may cause harm to the embryo or cause death during the early stages of pregnancy. Favivir should not be used during pregnancy.

Precautions & Warnings

Favivir should not be used by pregnant women. Women who could become pregnant must confirm they are not pregnant before use. They should also use proper contraception from the start of the treatment until 7 days after treatment ends. People with liver or kidney issues should be cautious and use the drug under a doctor’s guidance.

Overdose Effects

In animal studies, overdose resulted in decreased red blood cell production, increased liver function markers like AST, ALP, ALT, and total bilirubin, and increased vacuolization in liver cells. The effects of an overdose in humans are not fully known.
