Indications

Flexibac is used for treating muscle spasms caused by conditions like multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and brain diseases, as well as pain, stiffness, and clonus (muscle spasms). Flexibac can also help with skeletal muscle spasms from rheumatic disorders.

Pharmacology

Flexibac works by blocking reflexes in the spinal cord through the activation of GABAB receptors. This reduces the release of certain chemicals like glutamate and aspartate. Flexibac can also cause mild depression of the central nervous system and has pain-relieving effects.

Dosage & Administration

Adults & children over 10 years: 5 mg, three times a day with or after meals. The dose may be increased gradually to a maximum of 100 mg per day.

Children under 10 years: Treatment usually starts with 2.5 mg (2.5 ml), four times a day, and is increased based on need. Maintenance dose for children:

  • 12 months-2 years: 10-20 mg (10-20 ml)
  • 2-6 years: 20-30 mg (20-30 ml)
  • 6-10 years: 30-60 mg (30-60 ml)

Interaction

Taking Flexibac with other central nervous system drugs, alcohol, or opiates may cause increased drowsiness. Flexibac can also raise the risk of breathing problems. Flexibac may lower blood pressure when taken with antihypertensives, so dosage adjustments are needed. Taking Flexibac with tricyclic antidepressants may increase its effects, causing muscle weakness. Patients using Flexibac with Parkinson’s medication might experience confusion, hallucinations, and other mental issues. Flexibac should also be used carefully with magnesium sulphate or muscle relaxants due to potential stronger effects.

Contraindications

Flexibac should not be used by patients who are allergic to any of its components.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are drowsiness, dizziness, and fatigue. Other possible effects include:

  • Headaches, insomnia, and rare feelings of euphoria or confusion
  • Low blood pressure, chest pain, or fainting
  • Nausea, constipation, and rarely, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Urinary issues like frequent urination or problems with passing urine
  • Rashes, swelling in the ankles, and weight gain
  • Muscle weakness, which can make walking difficult

Pregnancy & Lactation

Flexibac is classified as pregnancy category B3. Its safety during pregnancy is not fully known, but Flexibac should only be used if the doctor decides the benefits outweigh the risks. Flexibac is present in breast milk, but the amounts are so small that Flexibac is not expected to harm the baby.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients with kidney problems or those on dialysis should take lower doses. Flexibac should be used carefully in patients with psychiatric issues, epilepsy, or breathing difficulties. If you have a history of ulcers, brain disease, or liver, kidney, or lung failure, Flexibac should be used with caution. Also, Flexibac may improve bladder issues in some patients, but those with certain urinary problems should be monitored closely. Regular tests should be done in patients with liver disease or diabetes.

Overdose Effects

If an overdose occurs, gastric lavage (stomach pumping) is important to treat severe cases.

Therapeutic Class

Flexibac belongs to the class of centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants.

Storage Conditions
