Indications
Florest 50 is used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, depressive illness, panic disorder, eating disorders, and chronic tension headaches.
Pharmacology
Florest 50 works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, which increases serotonin’s effects on certain receptors. Florest 50 has little effect on other receptors such as α1, α2-adrenergic, β-adrenergic, muscarinic, dopamine D2, histamine H1, and others.
Dosage & Administration
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder:
Adult: Start with 50 mg in the evening for 3-4 days, and increase if needed to 300 mg daily (split into 2 or more doses).
Child: Over 8 years: Start with 25 mg daily, increasing by 25 mg every 3-4 days to a maximum of 200 mg daily in divided doses.
Depression:
Adult: Start with 50-100 mg daily in the evening, and increase if needed to 300 mg daily (split into 2 or more doses). Usual maintenance dose is 100 mg daily.
Child: Not recommended.
Interaction
Florest 50 should not be taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, warfarin, benzodiazepines, theophylline, aminophylline, tricyclic antidepressants, or alcohol.
Contraindications
Florest 50 should not be used if the patient is in a manic phase.
Side Effects
Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues, loss of appetite (or increased appetite and weight gain), skin reactions, muscle pain, dry mouth, nervousness, anxiety, headache, insomnia, sexual problems, heart palpitations, and confusion. Rare side effects include low blood pressure and liver problems.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Florest 50 should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Florest 50 should be used carefully in people with a history of mania, seizures, suicidal tendencies, heart disease, diabetes, glaucoma, bleeding disorders, or liver and kidney problems. Florest 50 may also affect the ability to drive or perform skilled tasks.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose include stomach problems, drowsiness, dizziness, heart issues, liver problems, seizures, and coma. There is no specific antidote, but treatment includes emptying the stomach and providing supportive care, including medicinal charcoal if necessary.
