Indications
Folison is used to treat the following conditions: folic acid deficiency, megaloblastic anemia, and anemia caused by poor nutrition, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood.
Pharmacology
Folic acid is not active until Folison is converted in the body to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate by an enzyme. These forms of folic acid are transported to cells where they help in processes like making red blood cells, synthesizing DNA, converting amino acids, and producing certain proteins. Folic acid also helps reduce high homocysteine levels in the body by turning Folison into methionine with the help of vitamin B12.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Start with 5 mg daily for 4 months. After that, take 5 mg every 1-7 days depending on the condition being treated.
Children: For children up to 1 year, the dose is 500 mcg/kg daily. For children over 1 year, the dose is the same as for adults.

Folison is contraindicated for patients who have shown a previous intolerance to the drug.

Folison should be used carefully in patients with folate-dependent tumors. For elderly patients, a vitamin B12 absorption test should be done before using folic acid long-term.
