Indications

Genacyn is used to treat burn, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, ecthyma, excoriation, folliculitis, furunculosis, insect bites and stings, lacerations and abrasions, paronychia, pyoderma gangrenosum, skin cysts and abscesses, stasis ulcers, infected skin ulcers, bacterial, fungal or viral superinfection, sycosis barbae, minor surgical wounds, and infected contact dermatitis caused by susceptible organisms.

Pharmacology

Genacyn is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Genacyn is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and penicillin-resistant strains of Staph. aureus. Like other aminoglycosides, Genacyn works by interfering with protein synthesis in bacterial cells.

Dosage & Administration

Apply Genacyn three times a day. Wash the area with soap and water, then dry Genacyn thoroughly before applying. If there are any crusts, remove them before applying the ointment to ensure Genacyn makes maximum contact with the affected area.

Contraindications

Genacyn is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to Gentamicin. Genacyn should not be used during pregnancy or in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Side Effects

Side effects may include itching, redness, swelling, or other signs of irritation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Genacyn is categorized as Pregnancy Category D. Small amounts of Gentamicin have been found in breast milk, so Genacyn is recommended to stop breastfeeding during treatment.

Precautions & Warnings

Genacyn should not be used on patients who are allergic to Gentamicin.
