Indications
Grisovin FP is used to treat ringworm infections such as:
- Ringworm of the scalp (Tinea capitis)
- Ringworm of the body (Tinea corporis)
- Athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis)
- Ringworm of the nails (Tinea unguium)
- Ringworm of the thigh (Tinea cruris)
- Barber’s itch (Tinea barbae)
Grisovin FP works against fungi like:
- Trichophyton rubrum
- Trichophyton tonsurans
- Trichophyton mentagrophytes
- Microsporum audouini
- Microsporum canis
- And others
Before treatment, the exact type of fungi causing the infection should be identified. Grisovin FP is not necessary for minor infections that can be treated with topical anti-fungal treatments alone.
Pharmacology
Grisovin FP works by stopping the growth of fungi, though the exact process is not fully understood. Grisovin FP may interfere with the cell division of fungi and prevent them from reproducing. Grisovin FP also binds to keratin in the skin and helps target the fungus in the affected area.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: A daily dose of 500 mg is enough for most infections. For more stubborn infections like athlete’s foot and ringworm of the nails, a dose of 1.0 gm per day is recommended.
Children: The dose is about 5 mg per pound of body weight per day. For children weighing:
- 30 to 50 pounds: 125 mg to 250 mg daily
- Over 50 pounds: 250 mg to 500 mg daily
The medication should be continued until the infection is fully cleared. Treatment periods vary based on the infection, ranging from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on the type of infection.
Interaction
Grisovin FP may affect the action of other medicines, such as blood thinners (warfarin). Grisovin FP can also reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills, so backup contraception may be needed. The effectiveness of the medicine may also be reduced if used with barbiturates.
Contraindications
Grisovin FP should not be used by people with porphyria, liver failure, or those allergic to griseofulvin. Pregnant women should avoid this medication due to potential risks to the baby.
Side Effects
Common side effects include skin rashes, hives, or rarely more serious reactions like swelling or red patches. Other side effects can include stomach upset, headache, dizziness, tiredness, or difficulty sleeping. In rare cases, protein in the urine or a drop in white blood cells may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Grisovin FP is not recommended during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks, as studies in animals showed potential harm to the fetus. Grisovin FP should also be avoided during breastfeeding unless necessary.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients on long-term treatment should be monitored regularly for potential side effects. Since Grisovin FP may cause sensitivity to sunlight, patients should avoid excessive sun exposure.
Overdose Effects
There are no specific details for overdose, but patients should seek medical help if overdose is suspected.
Therapeutic Class
Other antifungal medications.
Storage Conditions
Store between 15°C and 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
