Indications
Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen is used to treat type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes when diet and/or oral medications don’t control Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen well enough. Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen is also used to stabilize diabetes in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar non-ketotic syndrome, or during times of stress like serious infections or major surgery. Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen is also used to treat gestational diabetes.
Pharmacology
Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen works by helping the body take in glucose through muscle and fat cells and by reducing the glucose released by the liver. Insulin has a short half-life of a few minutes in the bloodstream and does not bind to plasma proteins. After injection, Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen starts working within 30 minutes, peaks in 1 to 3 hours, and lasts for about 18 to 24 hours.
Dosage & Administration
The dosage is individualized based on the patient’s needs. For type 1 diabetes, the daily insulin requirement is typically between 0.5 and 1.0 IU/kg. In children before puberty, Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen ranges from 0.7 to 1.0 IU/kg. For type 2 diabetes, the initial dose is usually lower, around 0.3 to 0.6 IU/kg/day. The injection should be followed by a meal or snack containing carbohydrates within 30 minutes.
Interaction
Other drugs can affect insulin needs. Some drugs, like oral hypoglycemic agents, MAO inhibitors, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, salicylates, and alcohol, may reduce insulin needs. Others, like thiazides, glucocorticoids, thyroid hormones, beta-sympathomimetics, growth hormones, and Danazol, may increase insulin needs. Beta-blockers can hide the symptoms of low blood sugar, and octreotide/lanreotide can affect insulin requirements. Alcohol may increase and prolong insulin’s hypoglycemic effects.
Contraindications
Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen should not be used by patients who are hypoglycemic or allergic to human insulin or any of the ingredients.
Side Effects
The most common side effect is hypoglycemia, which can happen if the insulin dose is too high for the body’s needs. Lipodystrophy may occur at the injection site if injection sites are not rotated. Other side effects may include skin rash, itching, sweating, upset stomach, and swelling. Severe allergic reactions are rare but can be life-threatening.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen is safe to use insulin during pregnancy because Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen does not pass through the placenta. However, uncontrolled diabetes can increase the risk of birth defects and miscarriage. Insulin needs may decrease in the first trimester and increase in the second and third trimesters. After delivery, insulin requirements usually return to pre-pregnancy levels. Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen is also safe to use during breastfeeding, but the insulin dosage or diet may need to be adjusted.
Precautions & Warnings
Inadequate insulin doses or stopping treatment, especially for type 1 diabetes, can lead to dangerously high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which can result in diabetic ketoacidosis. Insulin doses must be adjusted if switching insulin types or brands. Traveling across time zones may require adjustments to insulin and meal schedules. Insulin should not be used if Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen appears cloudy or contains solid white particles.
Overdose Effects
An overdose can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Mild cases can be treated with glucose or sugary foods. Severe cases, where the person is unconscious, require glucagon or intravenous glucose administered by a medical professional. After regaining consciousness, the patient should take carbohydrates to prevent a relapse.

Storage Conditions
Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Frozen insulin should not be used. Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen should be kept in its outer carton to protect Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen from light. Once in use, Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen should not be refrigerated but can be stored for up to 6 weeks at temperatures below 25°C or 4 weeks below 30°C. Before use, the cartridge should be mixed by rolling Humulin 70/30 Kwikpen between the hands.
