Indications
It is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis, especially in postmenopausal women. It also helps treat osteoporosis in men. Osteoporosis can be confirmed by low bone density or a history of bone fractures, or a low bone density in the absence of fractures.
Pharmacology
It works by slowing down the breakdown of bones. In animal studies, it has been shown to prevent bone damage caused by various factors, and it increases bone mass. It is a very strong medicine that targets bone cells responsible for breaking down bones, and it doesn’t affect bone formation. In women after menopause, it helps reduce the rate of bone loss and increases bone density over time. This leads to fewer fractures.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: The usual dose is one 150 mg tablet once a month. Take it on the same day each month, preferably in the morning before eating or drinking anything except water. Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water while sitting or standing upright. Do not lie down for 60 minutes after taking it. Calcium or vitamin D should be taken if your diet lacks them. If you miss a dose, take it the next morning unless the next dose is within 7 days. Do not take two tablets in one week.
