Indications

Levoxin IV is used to treat mild, moderate, and severe infections caused by specific bacteria in conditions such as: acute maxillary sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections (both uncomplicated and complicated), acute pyelonephritis, skin and soft tissue infections (including abscesses and cellulitis), and enteric infections like diarrhea, cholera, and salmonella.

Pharmacology

Levoxin IV is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from copying their DNA. This helps prevent bacteria from spreading and causing infections. Levoxin IV is effective against a wide range of bacteria, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual dose is 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg once a day. This can be taken with or without food. For injections, the dosage ranges from 250 mg to 750 mg given through an intravenous infusion once daily.

Children: For children aged 6 months to under 5 years, Levoxin IV is given as 10 mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours. For children over 5 years, Levoxin IV is 10 mg per kg of body weight once a day. Sequential therapy from intravenous to oral may be used as directed by the doctor.

Interaction

Levoxin IV should not be taken with antacids, iron, or other products that reduce absorption. Mixing with certain drugs like NSAIDs or warfarin can increase side effects, such as CNS problems or bleeding risks.

Contraindications

Levoxin IV is not suitable for patients who are allergic to levofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any ingredients in the medication.

Side Effects

Levoxin IV is generally well tolerated, but some side effects can happen, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and flatulence. Rare effects include retinal detachment and issues like tremors or confusion.

Pregnancy & Lactation

If pregnant or breastfeeding, Levoxin IV is important to consult a doctor before taking this medication, as its effects on the baby are not well understood.

Precautions & Warnings

While taking this, drink plenty of water to avoid concentrated urine. If there are any issues with kidney function, the dosage may need adjustment. Levoxin IV should only be given by slow intravenous infusion.

Overdose Effects

If an overdose occurs, the stomach should be emptied, and the patient should be closely monitored and kept hydrated.
