Indications
Linatab 5 is used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults to help control blood sugar levels. Linatab 5 can be used alone when diet and exercise are not enough and when metformin is not suitable due to intolerance or kidney problems. Linatab 5 can also be used in combination with metformin when diet, exercise, and metformin alone don’t control blood sugar enough, or with metformin and a sulfonylurea when these treatments together are not enough.
Pharmacology
Linatab 5 works by blocking an enzyme called DPP-4, which breaks down certain hormones that help regulate blood sugar. By blocking DPP-4, Linatab 5 helps increase the levels of these hormones, which leads to the release of insulin when needed and reduces the release of glucagon, helping to control blood sugar levels.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: Take 5 mg once daily. If used with metformin, continue taking metformin as prescribed. When used with a sulfonylurea, a lower dose of the sulfonylurea may be needed to avoid low blood sugar.
Renal Impairment: No dose adjustment is needed. Linatab 5 can be taken with or without food, at any time of the day.
Interaction
Linatab 5 is a weak inhibitor of the CYP3A4 enzyme and does not significantly affect the metabolism of other drugs. Linatab 5 has little to no effect on the levels of drugs like metformin, glyburide, simvastatin, warfarin, digoxin, or birth control pills.
Contraindications
Linatab 5 should not be used by individuals who are allergic to Linatab 5 or any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include low blood sugar, sore throat, coughing, and inflammation of the pancreas, especially when used with metformin and sulfonylurea.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Linatab 5 is classified as a pregnancy category B drug. There are no sufficient studies on its use during pregnancy, so Linatab 5 should only be used if absolutely necessary. Linatab 5 is not known if Linatab 5 passes into breast milk.
