Indications

Metacard MR is used as an additional treatment for adults with stable angina pectoris who are not fully controlled by or cannot tolerate first-line anti-angina medications.

Pharmacology

Metacard MR works by inhibiting a specific enzyme (3-keto acyl CoA thiolase) that usually breaks down fatty acids. This helps shift the body’s energy production from fat to glucose, which uses oxygen more efficiently, leading to more energy for the heart. Metacard MR also prevents the production of lactic acid, which can cause chest pain (angina).

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual dose is 35 mg twice a day or 20 mg three times a day with meals. The effectiveness of the treatment should be reviewed after three months, and if there is no response, Metacard MR should be stopped.

Interaction

No drug interactions have been reported so far. Metacard MR is known not to interfere with beta-blockers, calcium blockers, nitrates, heparin, cholesterol-lowering drugs, or digitalis preparations.

Contraindications

Metacard MR should not be used by people who are allergic to the active ingredient or any of the other ingredients. Metacard MR is also not recommended for patients with Parkinson’s disease, Parkinson’s-like symptoms, tremors, restless leg syndrome, or severe kidney problems.

Side Effects

Metacard MR is generally safe and well tolerated. Some common side effects include dizziness, headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, itching, hives, and tiredness.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is no information available on its use during pregnancy. Animal studies show no harmful effects, but Metacard MR is better to avoid Metacard MR during pregnancy. Metacard MR is also not known if Metacard MR passes into breast milk, so Metacard MR should not be used during breastfeeding.
